Did anyone else hear about this?

I was watching the Trooping of the Colours a week or so ago and feeling particularly proud of my British heritage. I went on the internet, and what did I see on the Yahoo news page?

The UN has recommended we hold a referendum on the future of the monarchy. How bloody dare they!

I'm going to point out now that I'm left-wing mostly. I am totally against war, for a certain degree of socialisation, etc. So now you know I'm not a bumbling old codger. I'm 15.

I respect the UN as a peace keeper, and want it to remain. However, suggesting this when we know 80% of us want the Monarchy to stay, and most realise the amount of money it brings in and work it does... it's just plain insulting, expecially on the Queen's official birthday.

I can't find the link, but I assure you it's real.

So, when genocides are happening in Rwanda, no one cares, but when great institution is loved by the pople it serves, wow! We better sort that one out!

Any thoughts?

The monarchy has been around for hundreds of years and it will remain around for hundreds more. It's none of the UN's business...it would be up to the UK alone to dissolve it. So, don't worry mate.....you are all set.

I know! It's nice to see someone agrees with me. When I saw that I was fuming. Did you see that that article also mentioned Iran complaining about the UK's sexual discrimination. Seriously? If that isn't the pot calling the kettle black, then I don't know what is. I couldn't believe that the UN would have the nerve to suggest such a thing. Assuming I never disliked the UN before, I certainly do now. They really ought to mind their own bloody business. It's our monarchy not theirs and if we want it then we shall have it, with or without UN approval. So until the Queen declares herself empress of the United Nations, they have no business making any such suggestions. I'll tell them what they can do with their referendum! But seriously, the monarchy isn't just a money-maker. Out of the top 10 least corrupt governments in the world, six were monarchies including the number-one least corrupt. Few people realise all the benefits that come from the monarchy. And as for the 20% who don't want the monarchy, why don't they leave and go somewhere without a monarchy?

This question was posted last week and most responders see your point: the UN has no right to tell the UK to hold a referendum on the future of the monarchy. The UN was particularly ignorant and ill-advised because they seem to have no idea that government-issues and the monarchy are not necessarily linked! The Queen is safe from the UN because I have read that most British want the monarchy;they see it has a unifying force that binds history and people together in an increasingly mind-boggling world. And history as spoken: a republic was tried under Cromwell and son and it FAILED. The people were very happy to reinstate the monarchy!

How right you are! The UN should be worried about Dafur and Rwanda and countries that have Evil leaders that kill their people, that would be too easy. How dare they. Many are involved in scandals of stealing from the UN and get away with it Remember the "Food for Oil" scandal. That's why they hated Mr. Bolton (American)who called them on the rug and exposed them..About time they cleaned up their own act.Of course these bozo's want to divert attention from their own dirty deeds. The Queen of England is a brave and dedicated woman and if the UN member's had a nano of what the Queen has running in her blood the whole world would be a better place. The Queen is a fixture of your National Heritage and how dare they even suggest this asinine idea.

The United Nations have no business in the internal affairs of a well-functioning democracy like UK, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Japan or Spain.

The UN just needs something to make them feel better about themselves.
