A friend of a friend just contact me with a concern and I wasent for sure of the answer and thought I could get some help from you. Her 7 month old Shar pei is in her first heat. They took her away from the male but are still afraid he did breed with her. She is now in her third week of her heat and is still bleeding heavy. She should be spotting only during her first week. It should never be "heavy" bleeding. This could be an indication of something very seriously wrong. She should be examined by a vet. There are conditions involving infections of the uterus (called "pyometra") which can be fatal. Or it could be vaginitis. In any case, it is not normal and should be seen by a vet.
If they think she may have been bred, they should ask the vet if she can have a "miss-mate" shot to cause an abortion. Alternately, he may be able to spay her now. She is much too young to have puppies. Her health, even her life, is at risk having them so young.

It is NOT normal for her to be bleeding for 3 weeks period (no pun intended). There should have been no way these dogs were allowed to be anywhere near eachother, so no 'chance' breeding. Please tell your friend that she needs to be checked immediately.
