Or is this a rumour.

Yes and no.
Microsoft's next operating system is pencilled in for a 2010 release. Microsoft will tell you that is just part of their normal development cycle.
Everyone else will tell you that this will damage Vista because now lots of people are just sticking with their trusted XP builds and waiting for the new OS in just a couple of years.
Vista hasn't been a disaster, but it's been pretty poor (I should know, I use it). I think Microsoft cannot wait to move on.

Yes they are but its not that vista was a rush job or anything remember there was windows 95 then 98, 3 years between them. Then 2000 came out two years after then XP came out in 2001 or 2002. There was just a big gap between XP and vista for some reason.

Yes; Windows 7 (at least called that for now). Vista was a rush-job. Apple is now eating Microsoft's lunch.
chrislyon: Vista did have a long gestation, but I only say it was a rush-job because Microsoft had to re-write 60% of the code starting in 2004. They might as well have just started over.

On a test computer, I run a stripped down version of Vista Ultimate, using just 1 Gb of ram. It's as fast as XP though I won't switch over to it permanently because of the hardware I have that Vista refuses to run.
M/soft have really shot themselves in the foot with Vista, thus why so many people, including me, are experimenting with Linux and Mac.

I wouldn't call Vista a failure, it has many improvements over XP. Microsoft is working on Windows 7, and it's planned to be released in late 2009. But I doubt it will come that early.
But Apple is currently working on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, which is just going to be an improved version of OS X 10.5 Leopard

Its called Windows 7.
Vista will be seen as the new 'Windows ME',which nobody quite liked.
Actually, Vista is not really as bad as many think, of course many things are moved around (annoaying), but it make more use of available memory (and requires more), but since its cheap as chips now, thats not a factor now. There are also some other useful features too....shame there were so many versions though.....

I heard that they are looking to release a replacement next year.
I have to thank Microsoft for Vista. I would never have purchased a Macbook pro had Vista not been such a pile of buggy bloatware

Vista has achieved something unique - it makes XP look good and stable!
That is indeed the rumour amongst our tame techies at work.
