Don't know, sschueman, it's a tough call. On the one hand you hate to see great players go, on the other hand you hate to see them play with vastly diminished skills. I don't see where Sakic would embarass himself by playing one more year, though. He seems to have a bit left in the tank.

I think he definitely has the skills to player another year at the elite level, but does he have the desire or heart to do it...... (even for me, a Wings fan, it will be a sad day when he does retire... he is a true Class ACT!)

I will say this, if he is still undecided (like he has stated)... his chances of returning are diminishing. Guys know when they have the heart and desire to stay in the physical shape it takes to play at his level in the NHL, sounds to me like he is on the fence... which usually means they might be ready to hang it up.

Source(s): Side Note- He is very much like Steve Yzerman, in many ways.. and he heard everyone say that Stevey Y overstayed. You can bet that he took those statements to heart. Whether or not that has an influence on his decision, we may never know.

Stick around, the Av's need a real leader in the clubhouse, and a clutch player on the ice.

He should stick around, and I think he will stick around, hopefully. He can still play for a while in my opinion, but only if he wants to.

    Stick around.

he should stay. 2-3 more years. he's only 39. players have been going well into their 40s. im not saying chelios old, but maybe yzerman old (41 at retirement)

Either way, that man is going to the Hall. Although, I hope he sticks around.

I think one more year. Show a tribute to the fans, I don't think the team will have a chance at the cup, but give him one more year to break a few records.

Its really up to him. If he thinks he can still play with that desire he played with in 06-07. Go for it.
