    There are several definitions but most have to do with repetition. In writing or speaking, it is when the same idea is repeated though it is not necessary and is often the excessive use of similar words.An example would be, "The queen sat on her dark black throne." The words "dark" and "black" are redundant because they are both dark colors and black can not be defined as light. Another definition is in technical or engineering terms. Redundancy refers to a back up in case the original fails. The term can often mean excessive but is generally used to mean too many of one thing. In Great Britain, this is sometimes used in the business world as a term to mean a position is not necessary and is how some refer to being laid off of a job.

    redundancy or nimiety, if an expression is redundant it is a pleonasm. or superfluous always works.
