What is life like in a coastal state like the Carolinas, Virginia, or Florida?

I've lived in Arizona nearly all my life and love the desert, but have been considering moving to the gulf coast or along the Atlantic. What are the crime rates like? Are people friendly? How about the temperatures - what are the extremes? How about career opportunities, cost of living and typical wages? I'm charmed by the fantasy of living near the shore, but don't know if it's right for me.

Any info would be appreciated.

Update:

I'm a manager in the medical field, but I'm a Certified Medical Assistant, not an RN. I want to work again in allied health education or in a derm or plastic surgery practice.

There is this site called findyourspot.com and it asks you about 25 or so questions based on what you like temperature wise, crime, taxes..and so on. Then it gives you a list of places, plus a report on those places, to choose from..kind of a cool site.

I live about 5 hours from Myrtle Beach South Carolina. Summers temperature range in the 90's. Winters here are not very bad anymore. More ice then snow. There are alot of mills and factories around such as Furniture and clothing. I dont know what the numbers are but know alot of them are layign off of cutting hours due to lack of work. I live in a small town and crime in little here besides your thieves and such. But I suppose you will have crime everywhere. It cost alittle more to live near the coast but where I live you average house for rent with 2 bedrooms runs close to $500 month. Wages depend on where you work and if its productions or hourly. I like the people here. I have lived here 17 years and chose here to raise my 17 year old. I like it here because the people are just down home country folks that love to chat about there days and sit on there swings on there porches and wave and talk to you not matter who you are. Come out for a vacation adn see what you think. You might like it. Depends on your needs and wants. :)

Well I was a surgical tech working 7 to 3 at a small hospital in the Panama City Florida area.I could be at the beach for dinner most nights at 6,and as for life style I was at the beach about every weekend.

But overall the weather was mild(winter in the 40's) and summer was around 90.

Enjoyed it and would do it again if I could.

Virginia is lovely. You pay a little more in property taxes, but its worth it because they really enforce their laws. Crime rate is low. Property is a little expensive. Career opportunities and wages are booming in Northern VA. Near the shore, like Virginia Beach area, pay is lower, but so is the cost of living so it works out.
