video camera?

I'm looking for a good quality video camera that is affordable. I want a camera that is a couple steps above the average home video camera but I don't want to spend money on professional equipment either.

  • Well, you only have two choices - consumer or professional. There is no in-between. The 'prosumer' camcorders of a few years ago have now evolved into models accepted for professional use.

You might want to try the Sony Professional HVR-A1U CMOS High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ENON1A?ie=UTF... . This is a professional camcorder system. It was manufactured in a single chip consumer level form factor. If you prefer the look and feel of consumer camcorders but want to record professional level video, this is your answer.

The audio attachment on the camcorder is a professional level dual XLR system with phantom power options. It has the same shotgum mic and audio controls as the permanent audio system on the Sony HVR-V1U 3-CMOS 1080i Professional HDV Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000IF8NNS?ie=UTF... .

    - We owned an HVR-A1U. We loved Sony's CMOS system so much we also bought a HVR-V1U.

When you want to be compact and look like any other consumer, you can remove the attached audio system and use the twin set of built in mics (embedded into the top of the camcorder). The matte box is also removable from the lens. You end up with an extremely compact professional camcorder that does not attract attention.

    - In the stripped down configuration, The HVR-A1U looks exactly like its consumer brother, the HDR-HC1. The HDR-HC1 did not have the higher grade electronics and audio like its big successful brother, but it has evolved into its own series of HDR-HC# camcorders.

** If the HVR-A1U is too rich for your tastes, then you might want to try any of its little cousins; including the Sony HDR-HC7 6.1MP MiniDV High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000M3HVLQ?ie=UTF... or the Sony HDR-HC5 4MP MiniDV High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000M3EP4W?ie=UTF...
