Geometry: Can an eqilateral triangle also be an isosceles triangle?

My friend and I have a disagreement about this. I say since an equilateral has two equal sides (it actually has three equal sides) it can also be an isosceles triangle. I know it can't be the other way around. My friend says only a triangle with exactly two equal sides can be isosceles. Who is right?

An isosceles triangle has two congruent sides called legs and a third side called the base. The vertex angle is the angle included by the legs. The other two angles are called base angles. The base angles are congruent.

An equilateral triangle is a special isosceles triangle in which all three sides are congruent. Equilateral triangles are also equiangular, which means all three angles are congruent. The measure of each angle is 60 degrees.

    The area of a triangle = 1/2 * base * height. But here, we know the base and height are the same length (isoceles) so if we call the length of each equal side x: 1/2 * x * x = 50 x^2 = 50 times 2 x^2 = 100 x = 10 or -10 x = 10 Now find the length of the hypotenuse, using Pythagoras: 10^2 +10^2 = h^2 h = sqrt(200) = 10sqrt(2) The perimeter is all of the sides added together: P = 10 + 10 + 10 sqrt(2) = 20 + 10sqrt(2)

an equilateral triangle is also an isosceles. It has two equal sides

whats impossible is an isosceles being an equilateral

  • youre right; An isosceles triangle is defined as a triangle in which has AT LEAST two congruent sides, it doesnt matter if there are more or less.
