Does anyone else miss Ward Burton terribly?

Because I do. I'm a huge Gordon fan but my underdog favorite was always Ward. I even named my dog, Burton, after him, and always turned up the volume for his interviews. He's a hell of a driver and I wish someone would give him a fighting chance again.

Update:

Oh yes the Ward Burton Train! Cracks me up every time!

I love you for asking that question because I was about to. I was beginning to think that no one remembered Ward. Ward has been one of my favorites for years and became my number 1 driver when Ernie Irvan retired. I always hoped he would have an opportunity to race for an elite team with great equipment to prove what he could do. Ward is a victim of not being a "sponsor's dream" because of his slow Virginian drawl, but he has more charisma than many of those young, "pretty" drivers, not to mention just as much talent behind the wheel. It upsets me that every time a top-tier team is looking for a driver no one even mentions Ward. I felt so bad for him because I knew that him driving for Morgan-McClure would be a disaster. I'd sooner he not drive than come back and drive more junk. He's much better than that and deserves a chance in competitive equipment. I still visit his website on a regular basis even though it mainly covers his work with his wildlife foundation and the environment and doesn't mention racing. I always hoped that Richard Childress would put him in a ride since they were hunting buddies but it didn't happen. I watch a lot less Nascar since he's been gone. Give Ward a chance!

How could anybody not like Ward Burton? He's one of those drivers you have a desire to root for, and some of the things he said were awesome and/or funny. I'll never forget the '02 Bristol night race when he chucked his heel pads at Junior's car after a crash then said during the interview that he wished he had something he could have shot through the window!

It's a shame that all these teams have to go for these young guys, most of who fizzle, instead of going with a seasoned vet like Ward. I miss Ward!!

Ward Burton was one of my favorite drivers. He's always behind Jeff in spotlight but he at least won the Daytona 500 before Jeff. Those couple of races in 99 when him and Jeff battled to the end were the best. Would like to see him in a car that can compete every week but then again what driver doesn't want to be in that position.

  • I do. Search on google for the Ward Burton Train.

Ward was a great driver but the last time he attempted a comeback, while not in the greatest equipment, he still seemed rusty and maybe not the driver he once was. I have always liked and admired Ward, though.

Yes I do. Jeff Gordon has always been my favorite, but Ward was my underdog favorite. Now it is Jeremy Mayfield. Come back Ward!

    I always miss Wards way of "s l o w" talking..

He was a good driver just never got with the right team.Did have a little flash with Bill Davis but never clicked with any other.

  • Ward is one of NASCARS best gems. Just a really decent man and great driver. I too wish that he could come back full season.

I recall an interview with him and he was talking about his foundation. He was partners with his best friend and when his best friend died they buried him on the wildlife preservation. Ward came up to his gravesite and while talking about his friend, broke down. So did I just watching him.

If anyone feels to help support what Ward stands for...here is his site::

I know what you mean it's like if you don't win or produce an outcome in NASCAR you are out and never heard of again. It's very sad. I have pictures of his car in the Daytona museum after he won the Daytona 500. Jeff Gordon's car was in there too for winning the Championship.
