There are so many varieties of Metal music, IMO.

Anyone who thinks Black Sabbath is not one of the MOST important bands in Metal History - is completely ignorant -

    but, that is my opinion.

Every band that followed in new Metal Genres, like NWOB - Iron Maiden, etc -

Acknowledge Sabbath as their Biggest Influence.

...and ANY decent Metal band that has popped-up in the last (almost 40 yrs) -- Acknowledges a Metal Era - before them - that eventually - lead back to a Link of influences - that start with Sabbath.

    But, that's just my opinion.

Do these people make you like Sabbath, BOC, Triumph, & Metallica any less? Why do you concern yourself with what others think? Don't you think to them you seem like a Snob as well?

I don't disagree with you about the bands you listed. I love Sabbath. They're absolutely my religion. But I love a lot of underground extreme bands too. Not all of them, but enough of them.

The way I see it though Darth is that if people's first exposure to metal is Death or Black metal, Sabbath or BOC by comparison can seem pretty boring. Unless you give the heaviness and depth of Iommi's riffs a chance to sink in & grab a hold of you but that would take an Emperor, or Burzum fan a little effort. I mean I got into Sabbath when Van Halen were kings of the mountain, and by comparison Van Halen seemed a lot more exciting for a short while. But Sabbath crept up on me and before I knew what hit me I hadn’t listened to the classic Van Halen for 3 or 4 years. But it took a little time for me to get to that point. When Metallica hit they stole me away from my Sabbath spell, and I got to be a bit of a thrash metal snob for a while. But I grew & evolved and reminded myself how great some of the older influential bands are.

Don’t get me wrong as Metal has evolved I've dismissed a few of the fast ultra satanic bands, but when I took a moment out to really grasp what the musicians are doing, I was quite impressed and have grown fond of them. But I had my moments of Snobiness too. I like a lot of bands now in my 30's that I couldn't give a damn about in my teens or 20's. So give them time. They'll grasp things other than Aborted Lamb Carcass at some point. But in the meantime if you haven't already, don't be so quick to dismiss the bands they're suggesting. It might take a little time but you might be surprised how good some of them actually are.

Lol. "Cthulu's Left Buttcheek." That made me laugh :] But seriously, you're right. These people say that their fav bands created Metal, just because it's their favorite band, and it makes them feel "special." Black Sabbath created metal. It's as simple as that. They do need to get off their high horse. Just because Dream Theater and Rush have 20 minute epic songs about dystopian societies doesn't mean that they're better than Metallica and Black Sab. It's a matter of opinion. But Black Sabbath owns every other metal band ever. Even Cthulu's Left Buttcheek :D

There is no way a true metal fan could not acknowledge Black Sabbath as a pioneer of metal, as are Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Cream and Blue Cheer. Some people do not look deeper into the origins and for that i am sad for them. They are missing out on the innovators - incredible talent that created a brand new sound that has influenced every metal band out there.

While I agree that getting four thumbs down for suggesting Black Sabbath is ridiculous, it does not however indicate who gave them, or the reason. So to answer the question, yes the snobs of all genres do make me sick to a degree, but I have seen just about everyone here do it at one point or another (including you and myself). But usually the snobbery is in words rather than thumbs down. So with that, I'm sure you don't need to be told that thumbs down are not only given because of the answers, but also because of who gave the answer, which is a whole other ridiculous story. Oh, and I don't give thumbs down, unless I see the word 'Dragonforce' in an answer.

I cant stand genre elitists. I LOVE metal. I live and breath the stuff. But that doesnt mean I dont lsiten to both old and new bands. I listen to all manner of metal, from Black Sabbath to Belphegor, from Iron Butterfly to Bal-Sagoth, its all metal.

The Black Sabbath thing is truly a disgrace. How can they call themselves metalheads if they dont appreciate the first metal band?

You know, I've been kinda thinking about this for awhile too. It goes both ways too. Just because a band started in the 2000's doesn't make them less metal than Black Sabbath either. A lot people try and say a lot of the stuff I listen to isn't metal. Ignorance is a disease.

    Wow--someone claimed Sabbath wasn't metal? That's classic metal...obviously.

Though I prefer Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio..his voice is amazing!

Yes there are a lot of music snobs out there...especially when it comes to metal because there are SO many sub-genres and unknown bands that have big underground followings.

Yeah I get pissed when I recommend awesome bands and get thumbs down...people are pretty dumb sometimes...Yeah thumbs down for Black Sabbath?? WFT!!?? haha...I would never do something like that!!!!

I know how it feels. Many metalers are snobs, but there are some that are openminded. The Black/Death "kvlt" metalers are the ones that are annoying...the think-they-know-it-all types. I know some heavy metalers are snobs, especially Iron Maiden fans, but some of them are cool and don't start dirty threads...in fact, I know a lot of heavy metalers that listen to hard rock, hip-hop, and electronica too.

But yeah, "brutal" metalers as I call them are annoying and need to figure out when they are funny and when they aren't.

But let me tell you one thing...these "metalers" are nothing compared to Radiohead fanatics. They take music way too seriously and literally will attempt to dissect any mainstream band that they feel is inferior...no, it's not just emo bands...they'll go after classics like GNR, ACDC, RHCP...they'll try to find "shortcomings" with established bands like Rage Aganist the Machine and constantly bring up "RADIOHEAD RIPOFF" to Muse (who's only similarity to Radiohead is vocal style, but with more metal/hard rock elements). If they spawned here and brought their annoying indie attitudes with them, that would be it.
