Two questions?

1. Did you breastfeed or formula-feed?

-and-

2. How much was your child sick during his or her first year of life?

I am not looking for what everyone is always telling us - that breastfed babies are sick less...I want to know what people have experienced. I formula-feed my daughter and she is never sick, so I am wondering is anyone else has had this?? What about breastfed babies?

My oldest was breastfed and caught a viral infection that shut down her bowels at 5 1/2 weeks. She had only been to town twice. And she was sick a lot after. I switched to formula because my milk completely dried up during her hospital stay due to stress, even with lactation nurses it would not come back in. My youngest was on formula from the get go and was hardly ever sick. And even to this day my oldest gets sick a lot and my youngest rarely does. So breastfeeding did not protect my oldest the way people lead you to believe it will. the one that really gets me is when they say your child will be smarter if they are breastfed. Both of my kids are 1+ years above grade level and spoke fluently before 2. My youngest formula fed baby is 2.5 grades above her level in math.

    1) Exclusively Breastfed for the past 9 months.

    2) She's had one cold and that's it so far! She's very healthy and happy!

I think the reason most people say breast-fed babies are healtier is because studies have shown they get sick less often than formula fed babies in the long run. It is good for their immure system. I was breast-fed as a baby and have always been very healthy, I'm rarely sick. And I have a lot of relatives who were bottlefed and get sick pretty frequently. But who knows... That is just my experience. :)

I am breastfeeding. Jack is seven months old.

Jack was never sick until recently. He is getting over an ear infection but I am pretty sure he got it from the community pool. A few other babies I know have gotten sick as well with sniffles and such (both formula and breast fed) and the only common denominator we can find is the pool. I would say it was from each other but they had different ailments. Besides that he is thriving.

I breastfed for only 2 months, the rest has been formula.

My 7-month-old has only been sick one time - a very mild fever. He was born December 3rd, in the height of all kinds of horrible diseases, but he never got sick.

I'm sure breastmilk helps the immune system, but you can also protect your baby by washing your hands and carrying hand sanitizer around to squirt on the hands of anyone who wants to come close to your baby.

my son gets both breastmilk and formula and has not been sick yet. he will be 6 months very soon, so he still has another 6 months before he is one though. my sister formula fed both her kids and they were/are constantly sick. i dont think its the formula though. i think its their living situation. my friend breastfed exclusively and her daughter had a cold once or twice her 1st year.

    1.breastfed

    2. Well she is almost 7 months but she has never had a fever. But she has had a cold twice. Once at 2 months old and one right now...pretty bad as her tear ducts are blocked and at night her eyes are gooey. But other than the two colds, she's been fine. But I believe she caught the other colds from her older 3.5 year old brother.

1.) I never once gave my babies any breastmilk, not once, not ever. I have 8 month old identical twins.

2.)They have had a sniffle before (runny nose) but that is the extent to which they have ever been sick in their lives. (knock on wood!) Never an ear infection, never a fever, never any sort of vomiting, nothing.
