its not a gas leak its fumes the vapor line from the tank is probably clogged or blocked off and the fumes are not getting to the engine to be burned

Depending on the age of your car, sometimes the Gas fume return line on older cars can devleope a crack and so when the engine is running and the fumes are being returned to the tank, the fumes will enter the car. You will need to get your car into a shop and have them check the return lines to your tank.

You probably have a leak in the fuel filler tube, between where you put the gas pump nozzle in, and the gas tank.

Possibly a samll gas leak. or maybe a plugged/stuck PCV valve, also an exhaust leak that's close to your heater AC inlet may give you a gas smell
