Was Yahoo! correct in removing this question...?

Yesterday, I posted a question asking if certain varieties of Twiglets were still available and, if so, where in the country and at what supermarkets so I could go and grab myself some supplies because they're not available in my neck-of-the-woods.

Apparently this is 'solicitation'. Now, I might be missing something blindingly obvious, but I fail to see what's so solicitous (if that's the right word) about asking where a certain food item might be purchased.

I was going to post another question today, asking if anyone had any good cake/biscuit/traybake recipes featuring strawberries - but I'm certain that'll be removed for the same reason!

I thought the whole point of this Community was to share knowledge, but I've received so many nonsensical violations now that I'm beginning to despair!

The bizarre thing was that the complaints appeal address was for the Phillippines site - I thought Yahoo! Answers was based in California...?!

Could someone tell me if I have a leg to stand on?

Update:

Additionally, they don't seem to give a monkey's bum about questions that really *DO* violate the rules; the number of questions - & answers - I've seen re downloading commercial intellectual property via P2P that aren't removed & aren't removed when reported, either, means Yahoo! Answers as a reputable online Community is now defunct - in my eyes at least.

They seem to remove the petty, trivial and 'legal' & leave the illegal stuff up.

I came here to seek & share knowledge how can I do so reliably when 90% of the time my questions &/or answers will be removed for bogus reasons.

I had an answer removed the other day cause I used the word 'blue-t*t' - apparently it was 'unacceptable language'.

So it's now deemed 'unacceptable' to talk about 1 of Britain's best-loved, & most well known, garden birds, now is it?

Update 2:

Oh very funny, sailor; Jean, it's never too early for swearing - but it's always too early for rubbish jokes! <grin>

I'm not taking it personally - I'm venting because this over-zealous removal is completely contrary to the ethics and principles which should govern a site of this nature.

Fortunately, I got my question resolved (though not in the way I'd hoped) before it was removed; unfortunately, for the guy who gave me the best answer, it was removed before I was able to credit him with 10 points (my ISP farted between him posting & its removal; note to self, ditch Eclipse!)

Yahoo! get this sorted - PDQ! You are destroying a very useful &, TTBOMK, unique online resource.

The violation that made me the most angry was when I posted a link to the Community Guidelines in reply to a 10-year-old. Apparently it 'wasn't a Q or A' - yes it was, she shouldn't have been posting - & she needed to be made aware of this!

No one's told me why the appeal address was in the Philippines!

From the information you gave, I don't see anything wrong with your question. However, one thing to understand is that the Yahoo Answers team isn't always necessarily the one who deletes our questions and/or answers. Y!A's FAQ says that a question or answer will be removed if it's reported by one or more "reliable users." If the circumstance is more serious then the Answers staff may remove a question or answer themselves after reviewing it. However, the majority of the time they're just automatically removed and violation notices are issued, because of the way the Y!A system is designed. I personally feel the whole reporting/violation system needs to be changed because innocent questions and answers will be reported/removed while others, that are extremely offensive, are left alone. PLUS, I know that there are waaaaaay too many trolls disguised as "reliable users" who are out to get other users they don't like by wrongfully reporting them. This is vindictive and uncalled for.

Furthermore, people who state their opinions are being reported as well. And Y!A says that having a strong opinion is NOT a justifiable reason for reporting someone. They just ask that users "do not use slurs to refer to groups of people, do not insult other members, and do not act in a belligerent manner towards others" when stating their opinions. Unfortunately other users still do report opinionated questions or answers regardless of the fact that they don't violate any of the community guidelines. This is EXTREMELY frustrating because honest Y!A users shouldn't have to pay the price for report happy trolls!

Now, if you've received a violation notice you can appeal if you feel that you didn't violate any of the community guidelines. Just know that after appealing you'll receive an automated response that lists the community guidelines and then it will ask you to appeal again if you still believe your question or answer was removed unfairly. (Note: you may want to copy and paste your appeal's details and save it in a word document as you'll probably need to list it again in your final appeal). A couple of months ago I had a question and my points restored after turning over a violation notice that said I had been "chatting." So don't lose hope. People CAN actually win appeals. You just need to make sure that you address your case in a calm and concise manner as opposed to just asking, "Why?" or ranting. As a result the Y!A team will have a better understanding of the point you're trying to make.

As far as the appeal address being for the Philippines site, the only thing I can think of is that you answered a question from a Filipino user and/or viewed their profile and got stuck in Philippines Y!A. Sometimes it happens and it's probably just a glitch Y!A needs to work out.

NO - I do not see what was wrong with your question. I see questions like that all the time. I agree - our objective is to share information and help each other by answering questions.

I have never asked a question yet. I have answered quite a few, I have gone through periods when I got violations. I think that occasionally there are monitors who have some type of agenda. Sometimes they seem to get drunk with power. As you notice, I started my answer with ( NO ), in the past I have had long winded answers that got violated claiming that I didn't answer. So if I say a lot, I insert a YES - NO so the jumpy monitors don't ding me.

I have read in some other's responses that they can get their violation reversed by the link provided. I have never got one reversed, but I did give up trying after the fourth denial - I just try to give them what they demand up front and go about doing an answer.

As for the Phillippine site - I have no idea - I also thought Y/A was based in California. Maybe you were dinged by a monitor attached to the Phillippine link. Who knows?? GOOD LUCK. I still like Y/A and think it is great.

I can see where you're coming from it is all very frustrating sometimes. I had my first reported answer the other day. Someone's question wasn't even a question - said something like "I'm waiting for someone to answer this" so I write "Hi" and left it at that - next thing I know it's a violation..

My argument was that although it wasn't a good answer, I had at least responded to something that wasn't even a question.. How can I have violated by giving an answer to a non-existing question..!! I have appealed it and am waiting to hear back from Y/A..

They should kick "trolls" out for good too..

I know it's a bit early for swearing, but Yahoo answers are ful of shyte. I got busted twice the other day for not giving an answer!

How much of a non answer is NO, to a simple yes or no question. Idiots.

Don't worry about it,I'm not even going to waste my time appealing. Don't take it personally.

I suppose the bottom line is,our country is run by the same type of politically correct people, no wonder the country is on it's knees.

Be honest do you really care about the idiots who try to excersise power in a situation where it is not in the least bit important

Whoever it is that actually does the regulating does NOT follow the guidelines in any consistent manner. One day I got a violation notice for my, factually correct, answer, the next day, using the same answer to a similar question I was allowed.

If you appeal, they say they can't handle individual complaints! What's the point of an appeal when they refuse to look at the appeal?

They remove anything they want and they don't give a damn about long time loyal Yahoo! users.

They even delete peoples accounts (including Yahoo! Mail accounts) for simple mistakes that go against the Yahoo! T&C.

And Yahoo! says their mail system is the best? Even when they delete emails from peoples fathers and brothers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. I am still really angry and upset about it.

I set up a Google Mail account now and have told my brother and father to send me emails to it instead because Yahoo! can no longer be trusted. I have also emailed my uncle who is a journalist.

Most of Yahoo! is great.... just not the employees who work in Answers.

Be thankful they only removed a question, and not your whole Yahoo! account.

My Yahoo! accounts were deleted due to questions / answers regarding the presidential election. I mean come on! Because someone with the opposing view wanted the question / answer deleted because they didn't agree? That is why I am permanently punished by having my entire Yahoo! account (not just Answers) deleted?

You are right, some questions do remain on the board for some reason, and i really don't understand the violation you received for that question so you can appeal it in the link of the notice i have fought violations and won so you could too good luck.

I have much sympathy - I got my first violation notice today stating "Not a question nor an answer" for daring to tell someone they were spamming because they were posting some website they were marketing over and over in one question after another.

    Whatever.

It has taken me 12 hours to read your long question

You earlier agreed with Yahoo conditions of service. Why complaining now?
