car with both automatic and manual transmission?
I wonder if there is any car that has both automatic and manual transmission and can switch between the two modes. I prefer a manual car and my wife prefers an automatic car, but we can afford one car only. If so, would you recommend some new models? We prefer some brands like Toyota, Honda, Acura, Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes,... In the manual mode, does it go with clutch? Thanks.

Right. What they're all referring to is called "taptronics." You can find it equipped in all kinds of cars now. You can drive as though it's a manual, although there are only two ways to shift..up and down. Unfortunately, you can't take the car from first to third, or so on and so forth. Just first, to second, to third, etc. and back down.
Also, unless you get a brand new car, most taptronics vehicles come equipped with a standard 4-speed automatic transmission...unless that doesn't bother you. =]
Oh, also, a lot of companies will prevent cars from redlining in taptronics mode, or bogging out, by automatically shifting for you if need be...so that's a plus. However, some cars, (such as the IS300 I drove) will sometimes complain about letting you manually downshift if the RPMs are over 4,000.
Tons of companies offer this. Your best bet, though, is Acura, BMW, Audi, Lexus, or a few GM cars. And no, it does not come with a clutch, whether that's good or bad for you, I don't know.
But yeah. If you want an actual manual transmission that bad, your best bet would be to just invest in a five speed.
And that's my two cents.

the manual modes (or sport shifters) still use your automatic transmission, so there's no clutch. The difference just that you press the lever to tell it when to shift, instead of the computer telling it when to shift.
The sport shifter mode can be turned on/off with the flick of a button while you're driving too. All its really doing is disabling the computer's telling the AT *when* to shift.
You dont need an expensive car these days to get that feature. I've got a new mazda miata thats got paddle shifters on the steering wheel like a formula 1 car. Even my brother's jeep grand cherokee has it now.

My wife has a 2005 Audi A4 Quattro and it has the automatic and manual shifting. No clutch, simply move the gear shift over and you are in manual mode. Move it back and you are in automatic mode. Lots of fun for driving on weavy / winding roads!

I have an '08 audi a8, and it has the normal drive, but you can also put the shifter into a mode where just pushing it lightly and it changes the gear. but there's not clutch so you won't be able to let the tires spin;)
