If I want to get some muscle....but I'm overweight....?
I am 5'7, female, 186 lbs. I want to lose a fair amount of weight, but I also want to get some muscle (not ripped, but just muscle tone). Since I need to lose weight, should I focus mostly on cardio right now, or should I do a combination of cardio and weights? My hubby is starting P90X and I was going to do it with him, but don't want to get huge because I am gaining muscle but keeping the same amount of fat.

I would try to do about an hour or so a day of cardio, and also some weight training (alternate between muscle groups). The key for women who want lean (not bulky) muscle is to use smaller weights but more reps. I usually do 5-6 sets of 15 reps. Weight training is an excellent way to build muscle and burn fat (building muscle actually allows your body to burn more fat naturally). Also make sure to keep your diet in check (the right whole grain carbs, fruits, veggies, low fat dairy and lean protein) as it is just as important.

combo , you won't get big, your body as a women is not designed to,you are thinking that if you do weights you will add muscle to fat and you will then get bigger, but it doesn't work that way, doing weights will help you build muscle but when you build muscle your body will get smaller naturally, even if you aren't doing enough cardio, everything will tone and you will lose inches whether or not you lose weight, so you will still look smaller and wear smaller sizes, cardio will ensure that it happens faster and help keep you really lean, also weights will help you build muscle and more muscle burns fat quicker, so a combo will get you results faster for sure, do high reps and low weights to ensure lean muscle and lots of cardio, and a diet with plenty of protein and no sugar or carbs after 3:00 pm , this even includes fruit, good luck
Also if you have never consulted a trainer I might get a few sessions just to help you get on the right path and get your diet going in the right direction, I would also recommend the Book "THe Abs Diet for Women" it has a really great diet and shows you all of the great power foods, thaat incorporated with good exercise you should be lokking better in no time!

I think that you should do the P90X with your husband. P90X will help you to loose the weight you desire, as long as the are eating right. When using P90X just do use heavy weights when exercising with P90X. Make sure you do a fair amount of cardio everyday. Good luck hope this helps.

Swim. Swim. Swim.
Swimming laps is the best cardio workout out there. And it's fun. It makes fat fly off. And tones arms.
Well it does for me.
And it's also nice because pools open early so while you're wearing those fugly one piece most unflattering swimsuits there are only water aerobic grandma's and it's thankfully 5 in the morning.

I am trying to do both each day. I am trying to loose weight and gain muscle tone. I have been doing it for a week now. I know it is a slow process but I am starting to find exercising to be invigorating

I'd say focus on cardio first to lose weight and work on your strength and stamina (which you'll need later to work on muscles). But do a little combination of both.

Do more cardio than weights. Don't neglect to do weights, either, as weights help burn fat. For example, if your arms are fat, then do some arm exercises with free weights in conjunction with cardio excercise.

I would start with cardio and then as you lose weight do exercises to tone up.
