How many kids should a childcare provider have?

My son is two and his teacher has 12 kids in her class (it's not a home daycare). I feel like this might be too many. What do you think?

The laws vary by state. In Wisconsin and Iowa the ratio for 2 year olds is 6:1 so there would be 2 teachers in a classroom of 12 two year olds. I worked as a two year old teacher for 8 years and that number was fine but it depends on the size of the room and the capabilities of the teachers. 12 two year olds with one teacher is definitely too many in my opinion.

I work in a daycare and for a 2y old the ratio is 1 adult to 6 children now if there is another teacher in there then that would be fine but just her no that's TO MANY

    6Weeks-1y(1 adult-5children)

    1y-3y(1adult-6children)

    3y-6y(1adult -12children)

6y-13y (is like a school class about 20-25)

I would check the other classes out to and if they r all over ratio i would turn them in because that is not safe for the children I WOULD FIND A NEW DAYCARE

Go on line and find the regulations for your state, since each is a little different. In NY there could be 12 2 year olds only if there were three adults.

I think 8 or 9 is about the limit on 2 yos.

ETA: I live in GA and the ratio for two year olds is 9 to 1.

Source(s): I have a 2 yo and I think that is reasonable. Plus, I want him to be socalized.

that is way too many, you are right. 2 yr olds are very needy and want attention, one adult can not possibly give 12, 2 year olds all of their attention--iam sure you want your son to get all the needed attention he deserves and with a 12:1 ratio i do not think that is happening.

Does his teacher have any assistants to help? That does seem like too many children in a class. If it's just that one teacher...4 kids would be enough...5 the most.

Depending on the State you live in. Washington State's ratio is 7:1. It also depends on if they are state licensed. Call your local child care licensing office and find out. If it is off you should make a complaint. Best of luck to you.

    That is way too many!

By law a child care provider(no matter what age)can only care up to 4 children at a time alone. And with an assistent they can only have 8.

I'd pull your son out and/or speak with the city.
