Trolls on the LGBT category - why do gay people answer their questions?
A lot of people on this category complain about trolls who ask questions that insult gay people ... I doubt most people who complain about it have ever considered that they are only fueling the fire. The troll questions always get the most answers, sometimes over 30 answers and then it gets removed a few minutes later, but the legitimate questions usually get just a handful of answers.
Some people might deny this, but the fact is, a lot of gay people who use the LGBT category are very sensitive and will answer any question they see that is critical of gay people with a rant about how wrong they are. Other than feeling proud of themselves when they see they’ve received 15 thumbs up from other gay people who had similar answers, what else does that accomplish other than giving the troll what he/she wanted?
For example, the recent question “Is gayness a mental illness?” now has 34 answers. Some teenager struggling to figure out their sexuality asks a question and gets 3 answers. Has anyone here considered that if you STOP answering those questions, the trolls will find another category to troll?

Methinkest it's because we also need an outlet to express our rage at the injustice in the REAL world, where we are NOT treated as equals. Yes, for the most part, I agree that we need to ignore trolls (they are attention sluts, after all) but once in awhile, it's good to let off steam. It's healthy.
As for the "struggling kid" questions, we get more of that here than the homophobic rants, I think around 1 in every 5 questions will be "Am I gay?" "I'm a man who likes men, I'm not gay, right?" "How do gay people have sex?" and while I sympathize with the confusion, they can be repetitive. I'm for the suggestion of some people that there should be a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section where these "common" questions can be placed, along with stock answers that are factually based (with reliable sources/links).
There's only so much "kid" questions I can take. This isn't a counseling session, after all.

I don't answer obvious troll questions. Sometimes it's hard to tell though.
Questions like: "I just played with my friend's penis and I'm a guy, does this make me gay?" Are a little ambiguous, 'cause it could be a troll or someone who is really confused about themselves. In those situations I try to err on the side of a real question, just in case!

This is the 'Society and Culture' section. Why do you pervert it with LGBT questions? Society would be better without people making the choice to be gay and they add nothing to culture!

That's a good point.
But, when I answer troll's questions, I try to explain why open-mindedness is good, etc etc.
Although, I do believe that just ignoring it is a good idea - some people are extremely offended, for good reason, by these questions, which is why it needs to be sorted out and confronted.

Your apparently accurate as to you only have 9 answers about a really good question so they must like the attention, without the trolls they would think they were forgotten and always want a reason to feel important...like canada

I'm really only here for two reasons.1. to completely agree with Pangel.I used to try and do the same, but unfortunately I must admit I've grown tired of trying...her answer actually inspired me not to give up. 2.to say that a miracle has happened.....Tara J. actually made me laugh.I gave her a thumbs up for that one.....oh boy what a day. =]

You are 101% correct. For the record, I do not answer trolls in any category.

because hopefully someones answer will enlighten the troll
I live in hope
one less bigot in the world
I came across from the religion section to answer that mental illness question as I had seen it starred by one of my contacts
edit
I cant help a young boy figure out his sexuality
but I can give bigots a piece of my mind and hopefully educate them
and maybe in time ... peoples sexuality will be less of an issue

I don't mind fueling the fire...keeps it warm in here.
Oh yeah, and I get to confront some small minds. And maybe someone reading will get something out of it. Maybe not the idiot who asked the question, but maybe someone reading the answers.
