why might my car have a high idle?
i've got a couple things going on here.
my car is a 1992 ford thunderbird v8 5.0L sport coupe. auto tranny.
first, when in ONLY park or neutral, my car has a very high idle. when in drive, it shifts perfectly, and idles at stop lights perfectly. but when i start it, it's up to about 1500rpm, when i park it slowly goes up to about 1800 or 1900 rpm in a controlled sort of way. like a smooth increase. reverse is also fine. i once tried at a long train to put the car in park--up to 1800rpm--tried neutral another time--same thing. it's NOT the pcv valve. we just replaced that a few months ago. my check engine light has never come on. my dad thought it had something to do with the air sensor, and after unplugging that with the car running, it idles low at 600 or 700rpm, and one time unplugging it, it stalled. and that unplugged is the only time the check engine light is on.
second, my car kind of drives itself. from a complete stop, it can get up to 3rd gear with me never touching the gas.
please only answer if you actually have some idea of what it might be.
normal idle since i got the car (in any gear) used to be about 1000.
the battery died this winter, so i got a new one. it immediately had a lower idle at about 600 (which is perfect according to the manual), but it shifted gears with too high a rpm while driving. it relearned the shifting rpm really quickly, but then the idle went way up and was at 1800 when i started or parked or in neutral. now it seems to be somewhat fixed on its own, since it's now only about 1300-1500 rpm when in park or neutral.

Hiya... with fuel injection you have a cold start injector plus two tempreture senors.. one sensor for you temp water gauge... the other one is to tell the cold start injector to put extra fuel in to your engine...It sounds like your cold start injector is pumping extra fuel in.. could be fault with injector or faulty sensor telling cold start injector to put in extra fuel....
I take it that we are talking about a car with fuel injection. Cause I don't realy know the thunderbird setup

Check it for a vacuum leak. Usually small hoses going to the intake manifold. Vacuum leaks do cause a high idle but dont do much to the engine when the rpms are up because engine vacuum is decreased. You might be chasing vacuum hoses but I think thats where your problem may lie. If not it may be the intake gaskets leaking.
