waiter/tress and bartenders?

I have just been reading closed q an a's about tipping waiters and bar staff... (in England we don't tend to tip bar staff, we tell them 'and your own' which means to keep 20p or so)

After reading lots of entertaining answers I learnt that in the States bar staff and waiters/waitrersses do not get paid minimum wage... WHY? surely minimum wage applies legally to all jobs?

Are you a waiter/bar tender...? if so what do you think?

All answers welcomed and appreciated

The reason Agnes, is waiting table is the only job some women can get.

You may not know this but women here are still considered second class citizens and are paid as such.

While some states have abolished the waitress minimum most never will, the hospitality lobby is WAY too strong for that.

Some states, like Montana, do require businesses to pay the federal minimum wage to waitresses and bartenders.

Others are allowed to pay less because of "tip credit." Which is an assumption that they will receive more than minimum wage through their tips.

Michigan, and the majority of states, do not pay minimum wage to "tipping" jobs. They figure you make up the difference in wages in tips. Which is a crock- and then they tax the tips!

It's just another "special interest" group making a buck off the little guy, and I think it stinks!

It's not just the presumption of "tip credit", but the government figures that if the establishment gives you free meals, they don't have to pay as much , which is misguided.
