At what age do babies show left or right handedness?

I know babies use one or the other hand at different times, not really showing left or right tendencies. Just curious, when do babies or young children start favoring one hand over the other?

I am left handed and I think it would be aweome if my son turned out to be left handed. But of course my right handed husband wants him to be "normal" aka RIGHT handed. Whatever.

We tried to "test" him, offer him his pacifier with both hands to see which hand he wouldgrab it with. But he just scouped it up with his mouth. Smarty pants.

Update:

About drawing and scribbling, my niece used BOTH hands and I think she still does. But some people may write with the left hand but do everything else with the right hand. I have met some people who really want to be considered LEFT handed because they claim the only thing they do with the right hand is write. Like now it's cool to be left handed, haha, not when *I* was a kid.

My daughter is 18 months now. I still don't know if she'll turn out to be right handed or left handed, but through the months so far she's sort of gone back and forth with which hand she seems to favour. You won't really know until a child is 2-3, sometimes older.

There are certain activities like writing and eating that you tend to do with the same hand, but other things like picking up objects or pointing, etc... that you will switch freely between hands regardless of handedness.

I'm left handed and my parents said that they found out when I started drawing and colouring. If they would pass me a pencil in my right hand I would switch it to my left.

And bah to your husband! Who wants to be "normal!"

It will be really cool to have a left handed baby. I'm left handed and I started showing signs of being left handed when I was able to move my hands around. Before everybody is born, their hand orientation is already developed so left-handedness is not something you develope after you are born. Here are some ways you can tell if your baby boy is left handed...

    > Throw a REALLY soft toy ball and see if they catch it. This might not work because most babies catch things with both hands.

    > When your son is seated, place his pacifier in front of him but far away so that he can't scoop it up in his mouth.

My baby cousin started showing signs of being left handed when he was 7 months old when he would grab people's hair.

I started showing signs of being left handed when I was 6 months old when I threw things. It varies for all lefties.

I noticed when my kids started using a spoon or fork and not just holding it so I would say 1 1/2 definetly by 2 I could tell if they were left or right handed. You may just have to let and see which hand seems to be more prodiment.

I have two girls and one boy. Both the girls are right handed, like their dad, and my son is left, like me. And the next time your hubby makes that comment remind him that left handed people think with their "right" mind. (right handed people use the left side of the brain and left handed people use the right side of the brain)

My son is 17 months old and he still grabs with either hand. My husband is left handed and I am right handed, my hubby wants him to be a lefty.....We have noticed him grabbing a little more with his right but not enough to tell for sure yet!

I guess as soon as he starts to wright. That is a very good question tho lol. But I have noticed a lot more left handers lately for instance my brother my mom and my fiancee plus all my ex boyfriends on left handed lol (how odd is that).

lol, well, around the time he;s old enough to scribble on paper with one or the other it sould be a lil confusing still he might change back and forth, my husband is left and im right so i d k what my baby will be, some pre-schools will actually encourage him to use his right hand, so be careful!

My son is 22 months, and it was just recently I started saying he IS left handed (as opposed to "he might be").

It was pretty clear earlier than this, but I didn't want to say. Now, it's definitely clear! He's old enough to use crayons and what not, so it's definite.

My husband is also left handed he always says he hopes our baby will be right. He says life is harder when your left. Learning to write in school etc.

To answer your question you can't tell which hand til they are 2.
