Does anybody know when Attention Deficit Disorder can be diagnosed?
I have been having such an adventure with my son. He is fine at home but gets a bit overwhelmed and inattentive at school. His days at school are all over the board, some days he is great others not so good.
At the request of the preschool I had him evaluated and so far we have been told"
He had a learning disability with comprehension problems so he needed speech therapy. A few weeks with a speech therapist blew that theory out of the water.
He had Sensory Processing Disorder.
OT therapist said he was an activity based learner but definately did not have ADD
School psychologist said she suspects a high-funcitioning Aspergers
Pediatrician said no Aspergers but definately ADD and after ten minutes and with no formal eval, was willing to write my five year old a script for Ritalin. We turned him down.
My brother has had similar issues with his one son. His doctor told them that no responsible practicioner would consider ADD the age of 8. What's up? I am so confused!

Usually around puberty. I am in the camp of those who believe ADD is really just the result of energetic, creative children being forced into unnatural and stifling environments, like the modern U.S. education system. Often when children are given the chance to be active and find their own educational path, the "disorder" evaporates.

My son had problems the whole time that he was in kindergarden he get bad reports all the time from school that he was never on task he forgets to take home homework. he was going to be held back but the last six weeks were tough I had to take him in his bedroom away from all noises and sit with him and go over every thing he did the whole school year so he manage to pass well he makes it to first grade and immediatly he started getting notes from the teacher that he seems so distracted and spaced out. He didnt come prepared never on task does nothing at all the whole time he is in the class room they put him in speech and counciling nothing helped so I mentioned add and they said that it was a possibility I took all the notes he ever got from he school and showed the doctor and that was when he diagnosed him. He was in first grade when they diagnosed him and it so funny because after getting treatment for it I noticed immediatly that his grades went from a .333 gpa to a 2.0 gpa and the last six weeks went to a 3.0 gpa that made me so proud that I cried not only that he was doing better just the thought of how hard it was for him to catch up so quickly from kindergarden thru first so once that you do get your son diagosed be prepared on how happy you will be and watch the changes they are very noticble. I wish you and your son all the luck
P.s. I dont agree to Ritalin either ask for concerta My son was on the Adderal and that made him depressed so bad that he locked him self in his bed room and would not come out of it and made him sick the whole day just a little tip but Concerta did not make him sick was an immediate helper I agree strongly with the concerta of course nobody wants to see a kid on such powerful drug at such a young age but if you dont put him on something it can affect him real bad in the future

My seven year old daughter was diagnosed with ADHD and speech problem at age five in kindergarten. She has bee on six medications in a year, four stimulants and two nonstimulants and they affected her heart. Now, she is on no medication and she is not having tachycardia like she was. I am trying to change her died. She gets in a lot of trouble with aggressive behavior and was suspended this week at her extended day program. She started occupational, physical, and speech therapy this week at a speech and hearing center that I think is a blessing. They will help her with aggression issues. She does not get along well with her age group. She gets along better with younger kids because she is delayed in her development. It is very overwhelming and hard to figure out what to do. Do your research online because they have tons of information on ADD, ADHD, medication, and other alternatives. If you have insurance talk to them about your benefits and let them direct you to specialists which may have to be referred by the pediatrician. I really understand what you are going through and I wish you the best for you and your son.
