My son's ear infection...?

My child has had a recurring inner ear infection for the past month (he is 7 months old). The last antibiotic the doctor put him on was Amoxocillin (which I informed him of at the last appt). We had to go see the doc again since the infection didn't clear up, and he gave him Amoxocillin with Clavolate Postassium. I thought that when one antibiotic didn't work, that they would need to give him another. Am I misinformed? or is the Clavolate Potassium the difference?

    Heres what I found out...

"Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called penicillins. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium fights bacteria in the body.

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin."

Its probably a stronger anitoboitic to fight the infection, hopefully this time the new drug will help.

Suggestions: Cronic ear infections can be cured with surgery from what I heard.

Try stwiching to a new doctor, because if the anitoboitic is not working your sons infection can be building resisitence to the drug and a new doctor may provide new anitibotics and destroy the infections once and for all. Best of luck.

I would take him to see an Ear Nose and Throat Specialist. My son had recurring ear infections as an infant and was prescribed multiple antibiotics and eventually got tubes. When he was 5 he got another ear infection the doctor prescribed antibiotics but they did not work and the infection spread to his mastoid and was hospitalized was on antibiotics thru IV for 14 weeks to clear up the problem. At the age of 8 he can only hear 20% out of his right ear.

Bottom line: Ear infections are serious. Doctors continue to prescribe antibotics and our bodies get immune to them and they no longer work. Take him to another doctor. GOOD LUCK!

I had the same issue until I was 7, but didn't have anything removed nor tubes put in my ears. If I had the tubes put in, it would have reduced the infection rate by 60%, at least thats what they told me.

An ear infection is one of the most frequent reasons parents take a child to see a doctor. This brochure will help you understand this disease and the treatment methods that may be suggested by your child?s doctor or health caregiver.

He will probably need tubes in his ear's. If they dont get it fixed soon he could lose some persentage of his hearing... So take the little guy back to the Dr. and ask about tubes...

your son should probably either get drainage tubes in his ears, or it may help to get his tonsils and/or adenoids removed. That's what got my little brother's constant ear infections to stop.
