What dog breed looks like a fox?
Ok, so my sister was telling me about a breed of dog she encountered that looked JUST like a fox. She said it had the long puffy tail like a fox and everything. We are both knowledgeble of dog breeds, and can name and identify most of them, but she said it was a breed she had never heard of. The guy told her, but she says she doesnt remember (he had two of them with him)
They WEREN'T Spitz
They weren't pomeranians
They weren't Shiba Inus
They weren't Terrier mixes
Don't say any of these breeds. They also were not mixes, the guy told her the name of the breed. The only big defining characteristic she remembers is the tail, she says it looked JUST like the tail of a red fox
Now, Im kinda skepticul that there is a breed that looks this much like a fox that I have never heard of. At the same time, my sister is amazingly intelligent, has handled, bred, and shown many champion dogs including huskies, shepherds, and tervurens, and itsn't fooled by "purebred" mixes
Help?
OK, wow, I should be suprised at some people, but sadly, Im not. Thank your for having a brain, KT. The rest of you, SERIOUSLY! For one, I said it WASN'T a terrier. And for two, how does THIS
http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&rls=GWY...
Look like THIS
http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&rls=GWY...
Did you just see the name and assume "oh, it said fox, it must look like a fox"??
Edit 2: Thanks for some of the suggestions, but none of those seem like it! And we do know more then just the "average" breed. Every dog listed here, we both know and can identify. I originally thought of the norwegian Lundehund, or even a possible Norwegian Buhund, but when I pulled up pictures she said they weren't it. The problem is, even though the tails were fluffy, she says they weren't curled like that of a spitz, or an Inu, or a Sammy, or a Buhund. they were held down and straight, just like a red fox would carry its tail.
So yes, we know more then just your average golden or lab. That's why Im saying Im skeptical of there being a breed, because I think I would of heard about it
EDIT 3: HEY, I THINK I FOUND THE BREED! Lol it is a breed I never heard of, plus, and most importantly, the tail matches my sisters description! I can't show the pictures to her until the morning, though, so if anyone else knows of any other breeds not mentioned yet, I would still like to hear your suggestions. But I think this may be the dog she is talking about.

wow. I'm pretty knowlegable in dog breeds as well and have been reading about all different breeds since I could read, but I am puzzled. I hope you figure it out though because I am interested to know what breed it is. good luck to you
Source(s): ITS NOT A FOX TERRIER PEOPLE! obviously you don't know dog breeds so don't even attempt to answer. They look nothing like foxes. - Anonymous1 decade ago
Try an American Eskimos, or Bergers De Pyrenees. If it was a smaller dog try a Continental Toy Spaniel, then there is the Eurasian, or the Greenland dog, Iceland dog, The Karelo-Finnish Laika, the Keeshond. All these could look like a fox. I'm going through my "Dogs of the World" book and there are so many it could be. While I have no doubt that your sister knows the difference between a Golden retreiver and a lab, there really are hundreds of dog breeds we just don't see everyday.

I own a red-sesame Shiba-Inu and people tell me she kinda looks like a fox. She really did when she was younger, but then the black turned white. I really don't reccomend purchasing any animal based solely on looks though. A LOT of research needs to be done first. Shibas are stubborn, can be quite aggressive, and try to run away just as much as a fox would. It sounds to be like you're a bit more "dreamy" and I gotta be honest, that's a pretty shallow reason to want a pet. Sounds like you're just after image. If you truly want a dog, then adopt one. Shibas are a bit rare in shelters, but there's thousands of great dogs in need of homes.

it might have been a pembroke welsh corgi. they come in a color that looks like a red sort of like a fox. the only thing is though most people dock (cut off) the dogs tail because it can get infected because they don't have much control over it and then they step on it which hurts the tail. but if you do fid one without a docked tail they are quite bush and fluffy like a foxes.

Does this look/sound familiar? Norwegian
Lundehund

That's my best guess.
Good luck
ADD: That New Guinea Singing Dog is beautiful, and it really does look like a fox! Very cool! Thanks for coming back and posting the pictures.

My guess would be a red schipperke. Althoguh the most common colour is black, other whole colours are allowed. A red schipperke, with full taiil could look pretty muc like a fox
This is a photo of a black dog, put it is possible to see the resemblance to a fox. I will try to find a picture of a red dog. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bc...

We have pomeranians...they are fox faced. Poms come in Fox face and teddy bear. So maybe that's what she meant. Our blue merle girl looks very much like a fox

The only dogs I can think of that would have a fox look to them would be a Shiba Inu or the bigger Japanese Akita. American bred Akitas usually have the darker faces, but Japanese bred ones tend to have the orangeish red coloring that most Shibas have.
Edit: lol, do any of you people answering even know what a fox terrier looks like? It's NOTHING like a fox! It just gets it's name from the fact that it was bred to hunt foxes...geeze.

I just saw a dog yesterday who looked very fox-like. I asked the owner what breed it was and he said it was a Finnish Lapphund. Here's a link to images: https://www.google.com/search?q=finnish+lapphund&e...
His wasn't quite as bushy as the images in the Google search but did have a slight fluffy coat. He said they were bred to herd reindeer.
Hope it helps.
