  • Though making a backup of a DVD movie onto your computer would normally be a legal, Fair Use-covered activity (just like putting a CD on your computer as an archival copy), the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 unfortunately makes it illegal to disable the content protection scheme which is designed to make it impossible to rip DVDs to your computer. Thus, there is no legal way to do this. Nevertheless, some crafty, shady, illegal types have gotten around this and the act does go on with often-free software.
