Invited to Family Dinner in Vietnam. Appropriate Gift?

I have just moved to Hanoi. I am making friends quickly and have gotten to know the young girl who works at the coffee shop and her parents in my neighborhood. It is all very platonic, as I am much older than the young girl, so it's not a "dating" question. The parents are lovely and would like me to come to dinner soon. Is it appropriate to bring a gift like we do in Europe (a bottle of wine or some flowers) or in America (a bundt cake? a jello mold?). You get the picture. What is the appropriate etiquette?

Lucky you!!! I lived in Ha Noi for 4 years, recently returned and looking for ways to get back there asap!!!

Bring a variety of fruits, that is a safe option (try Veggies out beyond Nghi Tam for a selection of things hard to find elsewhere! Flowers are also appreciated.

My wife and I brought a homemade banana bread to one family and they really like it - actually several families and they all liked them. I brought a home-made blueberry pie once which was a hit!

I gave a bottle of my favorite Australian wine to a friend, and she and her husband are holding on to it for a "special occasion", which is a disappointment since I want to know how they liked it (I will just have to bring another bottle the next time so they open one!!).

I like what they do in Finland, where you come with a nice bottle of wine and a fresh boquet of flowers. I am American, by the way, but I find this way to be very appreciated by others. The flowers are appreciated, and the wine will be as well. If there may be some teetotalers, maybe bring some gourmet soda, like the kind they sell at BevMo (They usually have "soda milkshakes" or Izzes, which are fruit juice and sparkling water, no added sugar! =])

Bring a nice 12 pack of Bud Light. If they complain, simply remind them that american beer tastes like water.
