A Question for Harry Potter fans? (5th book SPOILERS)?

I think that's a privilege for the headmasters and headmistresses of Hogwarts, and other important people.

Also, I don't think it's actually THEM in the pictures. They're a copy of the people they represent, with the same thought processes and everything. I'm guessing that's how Dumbledore's portrait was able to give orders to Snape. He knew everything that was going on, and every decision he made would be something the real Dumbledore would do.

Just theory.

A painting is an impression of the person while he/she as alive... let me explain myself... A wizard can have a painting and this painting is a "copy" which repeat the person... it's not the person himself. A painting is like a recorded version of the person, like if you recorded yourself with a video camera for your children to watch over and over...

It could be possible for Harry to have a Sirius painting, like Sirius' mother, but I don't think Harry would want that, sometimes it's better to let people go...

Paintings are not a "Headmaster's privilege", but it's tradition that every Headmaster have their own painting because they continue to serve the new Headmaster and Hogwarts.

From what I have read of the books, the JK Rowling website and mugglenet.com they paintings are just parts left behind. They really are not the person or a ghost but more of a......well the only thing I can think of is like a condensation of the person. How the whole thing works I really have no clue. I know that you have made me wonder and now I am going to have to go see if I can find the answer. I am guessing that the encyclopedia that JK will be coming out with some time in the furture will explain this.

No-one wanted to paint the portrait of an alleged mass murderer! The paintings aren't the same as ghosts, they're a copy of the person, not an imprint of their soul.

Sirius was in quite a few photographs, but wizarding photos don't seem to like like the paintings do.

Maybe because there wasn't a painting of him...

But I don't really know. I don't think that Dumbledore *became* a painting. But because the painting looked like Dumbledore, the painting of Dumbledore had his characteristics and personality. I think that's how it works. But that's a good question. It was sad when Sirius died.

I think the painting of Dumbledore already existed before he died. I don't think it works if they make a painting of you after you die.

All pictures move a little bit, so the pictures in Hogwart probably just has more magic in them. No one 'becomes' a picture.
