Error message when trying to open Excel?

I have had no problems until now. I've had the student version of Office since January 08. Today when I tried to open Excel I get one of two messages.

Message #1:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

Message #2:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE is not a valid Win32 application."

Can anyone give me a clue as to what has happened & how to fix it?

Right-click on the icon of one of your Excel files to see if you can select "open with" and choose Excel.

If you have a valid, purchased CD, try contacting Microsoft direct. Have the product key ready to identify yourself as a legal user.

    Microsoft contact numbers on: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;...

If you were using a trial version and did not request and pay for a product key, you will have to either purchase the program or contact Microsoft to see if they will sell you a license and issue a new product key.
