I need a good normal looking house dog?

I have been looking for a nice house dog that likes to play and does good with cats. I really do not want any 'fluffy' dog. I know some of them are really nice and active but i am i guy and just want a normal looking dog. And it needs to be a somewhat small or light dog, my parents do not want a big dog. Also i have been looking at beagles and Finnish Spitz, but i know beagles are hard to train and Spitz are hard to find, so any help would be great. And please no fluffy or poodle mixes please.

Update:

when i said 'fluffy dog' i meant any poodle type dog that has to be groomed alot. And i have been looking at shelters and most dogs there are big. And im not sure a dog like a corgi or a douchhund would be good if they cant walk up stairs easily or have back problems. Its not that i dont like those dogs but i finally talked my dad into getting a dog and he is being very picky.

I am absolutely obsessed with corgies, especially Pembroke Welsh Corgis. They arent all fluffy and all but they are cute. They're small, but very active, happy to be with their owner (indoors or outdoors), and I know that if you got one, you'd love him. I don't know about the cat part, but my Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the cat we have kind of get along. My dog doesnt want to harm her, but the cat is somewhat scared of him. Theyve gotten used to each other though, and I've had my dog for 3 years. They can stay in the same room and not argue, because they try to avoid each other. The nice thing is there are no fights though. But then again, some dogs are really friendly with cats, no matter their breed. Well if i were you, I'd look into corgis. They are really good at catching balls and things, and very tough. In fact, many regard them as "big dogs in small dog suits." They really do think they're big and scary which makes them quite endearing. However, they are also extremely friendly and lovable, and will do anything to please their owner and his family members. Corgis are also very very intelligent and catch onto training quickly. They do get a little bored while training though (maybe because they're so smart) so keep them interested with little treats and things when they do well (you probably know how it is).

There are several smaller toy breeds that are highly trainable that aren't so 'girly' looking.

I know a guy that has a chihuahua that's amazing for him. Many toy breeds that are fluffy looking are really great little sturdy dogs. There are other small dogs in other groups but they vary a lot in temperament and needs like exercise and grooming. Some of the terriers are rather small and there's always corgis and shelties though corgis really aren't small but rather just short legged. ;)

Try a breed selector tool and see what you get. You can enter size and specifics and it can give you some good ideas on what to research further.

For someone that doesn't want a "fluffy" dog a spitz is quite fluffy. Have you just looked into getting a mix breed dog at your local humane society? There are plenty of small breed mixes that are all of the above, I don't know what you'd define as "normal looking" I don't recall seeing any abnormal looking dogs ever. You could try cocker spaniels, terrier breeds (but they are independent dogs that are hard to train), there are papllions, italian greyhounds, English toy spaniels, Minature Pinscher, pug etc.

Well, what is normal to you ?

I good family dog can be a Golden , Labrador Retriever, but they also need the right amount of care and excercise for it, they are great with cats and are very gentle with children. They are also highly intelligent! :)

Another breed would be The Brittany, but it needs a lot of exercise and care. It is also very smart and is good with children and cats. But, this breed isn't always for everyone. Are you home most of the day ? How much socializing do you plan on giving the puppy? How much training, walking, and playing time are you willing to put into that puppy?

And most important- Will this breed fit my budget if any emergency bills come up ? or any prone genetics health disease.

    Good Luck & I hope I helped! :)

There are so many wonderful dogs out there looking for you. Go to your local shelter and SPCA'S and see what is available.

Look for someone who is in your size bracket and is not too shy and not aggressive. Short hairs are good so you don't have to use a professional groomer and the baths can be in the back yard most of the year. No long ears so you don't have to worry about ear infections as much. Long ears capture moisture and that encourages fungus and bacteria.

The main thing is a dog that needs you and believe me you can tell. Look in those eye and you can read his soul..."looking for love"

If in doubt most of the rescue groups can help you. They are very interested in getting "forever" homes for their collection.

go to a adoption place and have a look around to see what you think would be best and you would be helping a dog find a home

you cant pick a breed that likes to play and likes cats because its not the breed its their nature

we have 2 dogs exactly the same breed and the same age 1 of them hates cats and is really lazy and the other is hyper ALL the time and doesnt mind cats rabbits even lizards
