My apartments hot water is scalding!!?

We just moved to California and I wanted to know if there are any laws about how hot the hot water can be in an apartment complex? Where we moved from the hot water at an apartment couldn't be above like 120 (not positive on the number but somewhere close) here I turn on the hot water and it burns my hands. I am worried that my son might turn on the water and burn himself.

Update:

it is a community heater with a locked door. i wanted to know if there were laws so it would give the manager or landlord incentive to act quicker... thanks.

Talk to the building management, tell them this is dangerous and they risk a lawsuit from someone burning themselves. They should be able to adjust the hot water heater so its not so hot.

You could also check with your county office (look up "Landlord Tenant Affairs", or for something like this in the blue pages) and see what the temperature is where you are (if there is any law on this), but the management should be happy to turn this down (if they are smart) on their own.

If you have an individual unit, turn down the temp. If it is a common heater, ask the manager to observe for himself that your apartment is dangerously hot, then try to get it corrected.

When I first saw your post I too was thinking 120 was the max temp for the hot water to be safe for children. You should definitely ask your landlord about it.

Mine is really really hot, too. But I don't have kids so it doesn't worry me. They need to adjust the max temp at the water heater. Send your apt. manager and email (get it in writing)

Let her/him know that it is unsafe for your childred and that this is your written request for her to adjust it immediately.

If your water heater is in an area that's accessible to you, have you tried turning down the thermostat?

If it's not accessible, have you called the landlord and asked him to have it turned down?

    mix with cold water
