Other poster is correct, a clear varnish does protect against damage to an extent. A cuticle oil will also protect as it makes the nail more waterproof, its water swelling and slightly flattening the nail that then tends to cause splits and peeling.

I'd apply a strengthing varnish to your nail (sally hansen has many that do work without being overpriced) and massage in cuticle oil at least twice a day..the massaging on the cuticle and matrix area promotes blood flow which results in strong healthy growth. Invest in a glass nail file, theyre so fine, they dont do the damage that traditional emery boards do and can last a lifetime if looked after as theyre totally washable etc. File your nails to a natural shape, your cuticle indicates what shape your free edge should be. It might take a few weeks before you see the benefits but if you continue this sort of regime you will have stronger nails.

Make sure you get proper nutrition. Nail growth is affected by what you eat, your health, and any trauma that the nail is exposed to.

If you've been recently ill, you may have weak nails for a while. Keep them clean and short so that you don't snag them on something and tear them off any further, and file any rough edges.

Eat a balanced diet, keep your hands DRY as moisture will weaken the nail, and use proper instruments to perform a task rather than use your nails--such as opening mail, peeling oranges, etc.

A good thing to try is a nail fortifying formula, to temporarily add support to your current nails. This treats the immediate problem but doesn't prevent it or treat the cause. There are several to chose from, you can get them at your local store in the beauty section. There are nail top coat polishes that have a matte finish if you do not desire shininess.

Another thing you may want to try is a simple $12 manicure from a professional. They are everywhere. Find one that you can talk to and ask them to suggest a treatment formula for your specific problem.

Check out the website I listed as a source for more ideas.

Good manicure at the nail salon and also clip your nails straight across and also a good nail flie can help keep them in shape!Don't bite your nails either as that can spilt your nails and make you get rag nails.

Keep your nails polished-even just a clear top coat.

Manicurist once told me that nail varnish is precisely like wood varnish: it shines, it stops moisture and chemicals getting into the top layers and weakening the nail and, most relevant to you, puts a protective seal around the edge to stop them getting raggy.

Long nails can be harbingers for bacteria, specifically if they are artificial, but these people are good for scratching and opening those little foil wrapped containers that will are so hard to get in to.

I prefer girls who have a natural look... sure makeup and also other things are good, but whenever it is used to enhance your natural look.
