Foal Halters?
Is a foal supposed to use a halter?
I have heard that foals shouldn't use halters because they are not fully developed in the head/neck. Instead, you should lead them by figure-8ing a rope around their behind and in front of their shoulders.
But if that is the case, then why do the large tack companies (Tuffy, Weaver, etc.) make and sell halters for sucklings, weanlings, etc.?
I don't have a foal at the moment. But when mine was younger, I used a plain halter on her. I just found it strange that a large company would make a halter if it was unsafe for the foal. I started her at around a month old with halter training, and she never had a problem with it. I never thought they were unsafe, but hearing that made me wonder.
Yeah, I know all about the "don't leave a halter on 24/7". My horses never wore halters unless I was leading them.
It just struck me as odd. Maybe it's one of those "natural horsemanship" things...

well, yes and no. you put the halter on the foal to get them used to having their heads messed with before they get too big to fight with them. but, you dont teach a foal to lead by pulling on the halter like you would with an older horse, because as you said, they are too underdeveloped in the head and neck. you use the 'butt rope' to teach them to lead. you do put a halter on them, but you dont use it to lead.

Its ok to use a halter on a foal, but you should never leave one on 24/7 with any age of horse. Halters can get caught on the fence or something out in the pasture. The main concern with foals though is that most people leave the halters on and never adjust them. And as the foal grows, the halter becomes embedded or scars their face. Even break away halters cant always be trusted.

Yes! It is a very good idea to use a halter on a foal. It will get him used to it before you start breaking him. So then when he gets to be about 1 you don't have to go through all that trouble, because he won't be affraid of it. Believe me. last year I tried not using a halter on my horse and when he turned one he was able to hurt me when I tried to get it on him. That got me 3 broken ribs.

Thats fine, but make sure that it's a bit lose so it has room to grow, and I would recomend Weaver, my horse has a purple one and it's very nice, get a foal or web halter.
