Coincidental Irony, or Commercial Stereotype?

Now, I can conceiveably believe that the casting of the very telented actor, Robert Downey, Jr., in the role of substance-abusive Tony Stark, in the recent box-office hit, "Iron Man", might have been ironically coincidental, with regards to knowing Robert's own well-known & well-publicized substance-abusive past....

...however, it was recently announced that Robert has been cast as the master detective, Sherlock Holmes, in director Guy Ritchie's new cinematic take on the character....a character, who despite being yet another fictional creation, has had a reputed substance-abusive past, as well....

...is this a case of someone's past coming back to haunt, only in this case, that 'someone's' re-emerging past might just be what keeps that 'someone' firmly on top of that 'someone's' game?

Update:

I admit not being privvy to any of the the details of Robert's personal recovery and rehabilitation, and I definitely have the utmost respect and admiration for what he has accomplished, but doesn't it seem that Hollywood is cashing in on this?

I think his substance abusive past and recovery may just be something that gives him an edge over other actors when it comes to playing these characters. Having these experiences first hand, he can bring something extra to that type of role that another actor may not be able to and I'm sure that is something directors realize (as well as Downey himself). Downey ultimately has to say yes to playing these type of parts. He may as well capitalize on his real life experiences, which it seems, is exactly what he is doing.

Don't forget that Mr. Downey gets to choose which roles he will take on. He also recently played a recovering alcoholic in Charlie Bartlett. I think he chooses roles that have a personal significance to him that will be challenging and often touching. This makes him a better actor and it also makes for incredible movies.

On the other hand. . . when has he played someone who didn't have some kind of vice or serious issue. I think he gets type cast because he can play the roles with dignity as well as humor without becoming cheesy or pathetic. In other words he's just really good at playing a drunk.

Hmm...I didnt get all of what you said, because im not that much in age (13) lol. But I think your saying that Robert Downey Jr and his haracter Sherlock Holmes have the past life.....

Well of course its not coincidental, directors well always pick actors who fit the characters role the best. In this case, its Robert for his similarities with Holmes

I think it's just coincidental Irony here.

Robert Downy Jr. just happens to fit the look of these roles, and he also happens to be an incredible actor as well. I don't think it's a commercial stereotype, I don't really think he'd take these roles if it were purely that.

Coincidence my eye! It is definitely deliberate and it is absolutely type casting. Anyone who says it isn't is naive. Who better to play a drug addict, than a drug addict? Movie makers are of the belief that there are subtle nuances that you have to experience in order to convincingly portray the role of a drug addict. Some actors who report to have never used drugs prior to securing the role of a drug addict, have been known to experiment in the name of their craft, in order that they might experience, re-live and convincingly portray these nuances. Movie makers know and they hire actors based on that knowledge.
