Why would it cost points to ask a question?
Cause it seems to me that if people didn't ask questions, there wouldn't be a Yahoo Answers. How stupid!

I know, Stupid isn't it.
AND you lose more points asking than you gain for answering!

Fast food places wouldn't exist without customers, yet you have to pay them.
The points are the currency of this site: you spend them to get information and advice; earn them by helping others. (Actually, the points are completely meaningless and worthless, so there's no real reason to care.)
Part of the reason, I think, is to encourage people to choose Best Answers (you get 3 of them 5 back when you do).
Taking points for asking hasn't exactly prevented everyone from asking, has it?

So It encourages people to earn points by answering other people's questions.
instead of asking and asking.
they also do it as a penalty. and they don't want TROLLS to keep populate the site.
CHOOSE A BEST ANSWER AND YOU 3 POINTS BACK.
so you eccentrically lose only 2 points.
