If u have your LCD TV & computer etc. plugged into a surge protector strip?

can it hurt any of these appliances when u turn the strip on? My bf seems to think that surge of power is not good for the tv/computer. I asked him, "Isn't that what a surge protector is for?" (so things don't get damaged if the power goes out...and then a surge of power goes thru when the power is turned back on) please help!! I think the strip should be turned off at night....he does not! How much electricity does it save? Also does it hurt for the wireless router to stay on continuously & doesn't that waste electricity?

A surge protector doesn't use any power, its what's plugged into it. If adaptors are plugged in, they are still using power when the equipment is turned off, so if you want to save electricity, unplug those appliances. We are told to turn off wireless routers at night or when not being used because of hackers on your system and yes, the leds that are constantly flashing, do use up electricity.

Well you are both right in a way. It doesn't hurt any of the appliances when you turn the strip on (so you are right there) but you should leave it on all the time (he's right but for the wrong reason). Surges of power come from outside the home regardless if the appliances are on or not and they can happen at any time not just when the power comes back on. The power surge is not related to whether or not the appliance is in use. An appliance that is turned off can still be damaged by a surge (the plug can be damaged and therefore rendering the appliance useless for example but it does depend on the appliance) The surge protector will either disperse the surge safely or turn off the power to those outlets and thus saving your appliances that area plugged into the strip.

Hope that made sense! So leave them plugged in and the power surge protector on at all times. :)

The wireless router will use about as much power in a month as a ligh bulb does in a hour. It's almost negligable.

Same goes for the surge protector. It will take a tiny amount of power so there's no need to turn it off at the wall - but he's wrong about the surge...

Surge protector should be left on all the time. Especially if you have a tv ariel plugged in through it. Lightning doesnt stop during the night which is a main cause of surges.
