I have plenty of advice!
I would suggest moving to a cable internet system if you are having problems with DSL. DSL is nice, but is not the fastest out there. Many of the FIOS / optical networks are producing speeds that exceed the DSL speeds.
Cable will require a modem but the company you are going with typically will provide the modem to you for a small charge (like $5 a month to rent it). No worries.
Take care,

Well cable uses cable like from the cable company lol. It does require a modem which the cable company will usually lease you for abou $3 a month.
The real advantages of cable is you will see a little bit higher download speed as well as upload.
If you only have a couple of computers dsl should be good enough for the common home

Digital phone works great it attaches to the cable and you can run your fax just like a land phone. No, it doesn't need a modem, at least not on your end. It's not like broadband(vonage). If you can afford cable you'll like it. Faster than DSL.

cable internet uses your existing cable tv cable. a splitter is used with one signal going to your cable tv cable and the other going to the cable for internet. The cable plugs into a cable modem.

Yes, you get the modem from the internet provider.
