Can you help me pick a good paying rewarding career so I can move out of my parents house and live on my own?
Hi all! I really need some good career advice right now in my life. I have an Associate's degree in Computer Information Systems and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. I'm having a hard time finding a good paying job right now. Maybe it's because of the bad economy. I just don't know. You know, I don't mind going to grad. school if I have to as long as whatever field of study I choose this time will pay me substantial income after I graduate the next time around. I kinda feel in some ways that I went to college for nothing because I'm now still doing commerical security work, which is my old college job. It pays me a low $20k per year with no benefits and I'm financially forced to be stuck living with my parents because I can't financially take care of myself at this point on my low income. It's a depressing life. I'm 28, single, no kids, and I'm definitely ready to be on my own in every way but I don't know what to do in terms of a job. Please only give me realistic advice. Thanks!

best suggestion i can give you is to get a job abroad. there are agencies that offer 6 months-2 year contracts. and no, it doesnt have to be a security job. your background could probably give you jobs in healthcare, education system, computer companies, etc. from asia to europe to arab countries. and the best part is that you get to have an adventure (that is if you have an open mind. unfortunately, a lot of americans i have worked with have this "back in the states" mentality); you get to meet different people from different walks of life; no taxes, low cost of living and free accommodations (mostly for arab countries); you get to save more of your salary (some of my friends paid off their mortgages by working abroad); you are out of the house but wont have the hassles of moving into a new place (well, that could happen after you eventually get your own place); and so on and so forth. hope all works out for you. be patient.

It's hard to give someone advice on what to do with their life. If you have had this security job through college then you should have a substantial amount of experience in the field for your resume... even if you just look for a differnt security job you could make more. 20K a year is not much... (still depending on where you live). You need to find a better job and going for another degree could leave you exactly where you are now, 2 years down the road. Check out craigs list .com and your local newspaper for some jobs. Maybe monster jobs.com. Many jobs will pay you more than that. You also didn't mention if you are working in that job full time... but I assume you are not? Good luck finding a job.

It looks like you changed your mind about your interests after your Associate's degree, so CIS may not be your best bet. Certainly, if you have been working in security since then, your skills are now out of date. A degree in psychology can lead to a lot of different possibilities: you could try to go into social work with people who have finished prison terms, for instance. What do you do on your own time? This is something to consider when you think about the rest of your life: if you like fixing your car, you might want to work in auto sales (although all the car companies are having a hard time right now, that won't be permanent). If you like to paint or write, consider writing courses, etc.
Yes the economy right now is in a bad state, but you need to spend time thinking about what you want to do, then figure out how to get there. If you decide you want to use psychology and counsel people, you may need that master's degree, but don't start another degree program unless you're absolutely positive you need it.
Wise people often say "do what you like to do, and the money will be there". In other words, a person who is good at acting finds enough acting jobs, or teaching theater, to pay bills, a carpenter becomes known for his skill and he does well, etc. Take this time now to consider what kind of life you want to be living in 5 years -- get detailed in your thoughts -- and then set out to be that person.
Good luck, and be positive.

good thing that u have your degrees. bad thing is they don't related much to each other. but dont loose your hope just yet. what is it u really love to do? Psychology i dont know much, but if u r ready to take a good pay in computer career CIS, then improve your computer skills, buying books to learn and taking test/exams to get certified. the hottest jobs w/best salaries right now is those who know SharePoint/ Web Developing (with SQL and/or ASP.NET)
involve w/ a local school (counselings/ networking/ friends/ neighbors, etc.) of course, people will give u tons of thoughts. so it's up to u to make it happen at some point. it's great if u love what u do ---but at the end of a day, a job is a job. but a job with better paid would fulfill your sense of being much better. not to mention, it would paid off your efforts and time.
get your master degree only if u had calculated your future salary: will it be high enough to paid your bills, car, house, student loan, etc., 2-3 years after u graduated? reseach for ideas 1st. u can Google for salaries too. but if your parents could afford it 4 u - then that is another case.
whichever path u decide, you really need to be committed to make a change - a BIG change to get out of "depressing life". fight 4 it if u had to. good thing is u r single and can live w/your parents---so take advantage of it and use your strength to make a move in order to obtain better-paid-job.
best of luck!

i dont know what state you live in but look into the department of corrections/state prisons. they have some of the best benefits and you could work either profession cuz they have opportunities for both.
