Periodontal disease and lying dentists?

I just switched dentists because I've changed insurance. I brush my teeth regularly, floss, use mouthwash, waterpik. Except regular maintenance I've never needed any work. The new dentists said, I have periodontal disease and I need antibiotic therapy, scaling, rooth planning. I didn't say anything, I left his office and immediately went to another dentist to get second opinion. They did another X-ray and the second dentist said, my teeth are in perfect shape. Which one is telling the truth and which one is lying? My teeth are not bleeding, not hurting, my gums are nice pink color how can I tell if I have periodontal disease or not?

If you had it,your gums would be bleeding. The second dentist is probably telling the truth! I'd go with him.

Does sound a bit fishy. But periodontal disease can happen to those with great teeth. Genetics is what can get you.

I have amazing teeth, but my mom had periodontal disease, plus a bone destroying disease in her mouth. So I go to the dentists every 6 months just as a preventative measure.

The antibiotics wont hurt you if you do decide to take the therapy and end up not having the disease.

Well there's really a 50-50 chance, because periodontal disease is usually diagnosed after somebody has previously had gingivitis (inflammed gums from build-up of plaque and the bacteria inside it). But periodontal disease doesn't always involve swollen or inflammed gums because it is caused by bacteria in the plaque that produces toxins and begins to break down gum tissue and bone - making loose teeth. So watch out if you feel like your teeth are getting looser and beginning to get weaker because this means you DO have periodontal disease. But if they remain healthy then the one dentist probably made a mistake.

And unlike the first person said..that you would be bleeding. Thats not really true I know alot of people who have had it in the past and really, unless its THAT bad, you only bleed if you brush or floss too hard. Most symptoms are receding gum lines, bad breath, pus between teeth and gums, tender gums, and a change in the alignment of your bite. So thats all i know, hope this helped.

Long link address, but I found some very graphic photos of periodontal disease.... If any of them look like you, you will want to run to the dentist!!
