Have 13mo old baby, want to get a puppy.?

I have grown up with dogs, 4 border collies at one time, and find it very strange not having one now. My son is just starting to crawl. Would it be an awful idea to get a puppy now? I want something docile and trustworthy with kids like a golden retriever. We are planning baby number 2 in about 2 years from now and I thought it might be best if puppy was a bit older by that point so would be easier around new baby. xx

Update:

I would love a rescue dog but was advised against it by the rspca as you cannot guarentee how they have been treated in the past so although they might seem fine with children they might one day snap for no reason because of something thats happebed to them previously.

You will certainly have your hands full- but the benefits of having your child establish love and respect for animals far outweighs the hard work. In a perfect world a rescue or shelter dog would be best- but I understand your fears. I had the same issues when my husband and I decided to get a puppy. Although my son had not yet been born (we found out we were pregnant about 3 months after getting our puppy!) we knew we wanted kids and wanted a good family dog. We decided to get a lab. Although he can be a handful he is WONDERFUL with our 9-month old son - who is now crawling all over the house. I think that you just have to follow a couple of rules:

-The dog's toys are not for the baby

-The baby's toys are not for the dog

-The baby should never go near the dog's food

-Dogs are not to be crawled on, tugged or pulled- but treated gently

By establishing these rules early on you will have a happy baby/puppy experience. Good luck - oh- and I think a Golden or a lab is a great choice.

You'll have your hands full with a puppy right now. If you think you can handle it I'm sure the baby and puppy would get along.

It would probably make better sense to go to a dog rescue society and rescue/adopt an older dog (like 1-2 years old) that is already trained. That way things will be less stressful. It might be hard to find a golder retriever at a place like that, but if you're patient it could happen...but in general I suggest getting an older dog right now. Get a puppy when your second is over 4 years old.

I'd wait until the smallest child was a bit older - at least walking - and I don't think that I would get a larger dog or a puppy.

I'd probably go for an older dog from a shelter that requires rehoming (as puppies tend to nip) who is child friendly and maybe a mid sized dog.

Please also remember that your child may be allergic to dogs.

My son is but we didn't find out til he was 4.

properly - i do no longer see the wear in getting a dogs once you have a 13mo toddler... the domestic dog will the thank you to act around it because it grows. although! I do have an argument with people who have already got a dogs having greater toddlers... there is often the prospect that the dogs won't like the hot arrival or certainly you will unexpectedly realize that 2 youthful toddlers + a dogs is merely too lots. My suggestion could be to attend till the final toddler you propose on having is 13mo. That way, the domestic dog will enhance with youthful toddlers around it and you will understand how busy you're and might ensure you have time for the domestic dog and continually will do.
