Maths Question, confusing riddle.?

Three men walked into hotel. The receptionist tells them it will cost them $30 for a room, so each of the man hand over $10.

Later that evening, the receptionist realizes he was wrong, and that the room should have only cost $25, so he gives $5 to the bell man to run up to the room. On the way up their, the bell runner realises that the 3 men won't be able to split the $5 equally, so he gives each of the 3 men $1 and decides to keep the remaining $2 for himself.

When you add up this equation:

Each of the 3 men payed $10, then got $1 back, therefore spending $9 each.

3x9=27

The bell man took $2 for himself.

27+2=29.

I'm so confused as to where the other dollar went!!!! Any ideas, and if so is there a maths law related to this kind of equation?

Thankyou..

Let's say you have three men, who each hand the receptionist $10. The receptionist now has $30.

The receptionist then gives $5 to the bell man (so the recep. now has $25). The bell man gives each of the men $1, and the bell man now has $2.

Here's the actual distribution of money:

    receptionist : $25

    bellman: $2

    the three men: 3 x $1

    Total: $30

Nothing was lost in the way.

The $9 that each man spent actually went to both the receptionist and the bellman. Of this $27, 25 went to the receptionist and 2 went to the bellman. The 2 in the equation:

    27 + 2 = 29

is actually a part of the 27. Pretty deceptive!

Three men walked into hotel. The receptionist tells them it will cost them $30 for a room, so each of the man hand over $10.

EACH MAN GAVE $10 SO HOTEL RECEIVED $30.

    EACH MAN RECEIVED $1 SO

    HOTEL RECEIVED $30 -- $3 = $27

When you add up this equation:

Each of the 3 men payed $10, then got $1 back, therefore spending $9 each.

    3x9=27

The bell man took $2 for himself.

    27+2=29.

I'm so confused as to where the other dollar went!!!! Any ideas, and if so is there a maths law related to this kind of equation?

    MATH LAW IS $27 WITH HOTEL + $3 WITH MEN = $30

    OR $25 + $3 + $2 = $30.

Ooh. Trixy question. The answer comes from a logical fallacy. It's this statement right here: "This means that each man paid nine dollars for the room." Where did the nine come from? It came from 30-33=9. Why on earth would you subtract three, though? They were out FIVE. The math done properly should be 30-53=8.33. Replace the nine with that number and the problem works out just fine (minus the penny we just lost in rounding down). Observe: This means that each man paid 8.33 dollars for the room. 8.33 dollars times the three (three men) is twenty-five. Now add the two dollars the bellboy took, plus the three dollars that was returned to them and that is thirty. There is no reason to add the $2 back in because it was in the $9 each of them paid. You could just add back in the $3 they got back.

  • if there were 3 men and they split a 5 dollar bill there is three dollars there and the bell man took two dollars so therefore the 3 dollars that the men had and the two dollars that the bell man took adds up to 5 dollars!

hmmmm... this is hard... well maybe since they all together paid 30$ and then they where suposed to get 5$ back

    30 - 5 = 25

then if all the men got a dollar back it would be 3$

    25+3=28

and if the bell boy took the 2$

    28+2=30

you were looking at it the wrong way

    hope i helped!
