Blink 182 has a song called "I Miss You"
I Remember You - Skid Row (it's such an amazing song)
This may not be an "I miss you" song, but my friends and I did a project for our American Studies class (it's AP English III and AP US History in a block class) and we used the song Silhouette when it was on the parts about Iraq.

metallica - nothing else matters "so close no matter how far...."
Blink 182 - I miss you
Three Doors Down - When I'm Gone
Nickelback - far away ... this one is very good
Personally I think country songs would be better like Keith Urban , Kenny Chesney, etc... They would be more of the right mood.
When you go to college don't forget about him. Best of luck to you and him.

In My Life-The Beatles
it has a really deep message...
song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym0x3vTw6yc
Lyrics:
There are places i'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends i still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life i've loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When i think of love as something new
Though i know i'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know i'll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more
Though i know i'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know i'll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more
In my life i love you more
