AKA padraig I can mostly be found in the R&P section of E&M, though I make occasional forays into a handful of other categories. I'm a music, film, and photography buff, and a voracious reader. I'm a soccer (football) supporter and sometimes player, and I'm into genealogy and other types of history. Oh, and I love words and word games - hit me up if you want a game of Literati. Music-wise, I like a wide-range of genres, but lean heavily toward proto-punk, punk, post-punk, indie, psychedelic, garage rock, British Invasion bands, Bob Dylan and gut-bucket Blues/Blues rock. I'm mostly harmless.
"Don't say I'll be better off" song?
Not sure I have the lyric right but it's something along those line and it's part of the chorus. It's a current pop song (female vocalist) and I don't normally go in for pop, but the lyrics resonated with me. Anyone have any ideas what song this is from?

I'll be visiting St. Louis next week and I'm looking for some fun evenings out- perhaps off the beaten path a little. Any recommendations?
1 AnswerBlues1 decade agoCare to rate my local "band of the week" (late night METAL edition)?
This is #4 in a series featuring bands or artists from my hometown, Columbus, Ohio.
EARLY MAN is a stripped-down metal/thrash trio (sometimes quartet) formed by Guitarist/vocalist Mike Conte and drummer Adam Bennati in Brooklyn, NYC in 2003. The childhood friends grew up in Columbus and were raised in the conservative Pentecostal church. Cast out by family and friends they turned to the gospels of Halford, Hetfield, Ozzy, and Lemmy.
The band's first release was a self-tiled EP on Monitor Records in 2005. That same year they recorded their only full-length LP to date,"Closing In" on Matador Records (yes, you read that correctly). Their lastest is a 4-song EP "Beware the Circling Fin" released in October 2008 on The End Records.
The Ep was mixed by Jack Endino who founded the Seattle band Skin Yard and did engineering work on influencial grunge records by Mudhoney, Soundgarden and Nirvana.

My "local band of the week" is a day late this week due to pre-game and post-game festivities for the U.S.-Mexico World Cup qualifier match held here in Columbus last night. This is #3 in a series featuring bands or artists from my hometown, Columbus, Ohio.
NEW BOMB TURKS is a garage/punk band that has been on the scene for 15 years, during which time the band has released ten LPs and two EPs on six different labels."
The single "Toulouse-Lautrec" is off of the band's first LP "Destroy-Oh-Boy!"released in 1993.

Here's another song called "Weekend" from "Switchblade Tongues, Butterknife Brains", released a decade later.

The band has been on a bit of a hiatus since 2005, with members "pursuing other interests". They still play the occasional show around town, but haven't been touring or recording.

This is #2 in a series featuring bands or artists from (or that got their start in my hometown, Columbus, Ohio.
PSYCHEDELIC HORSESH*T, like last week's band, Times New Viking, is an indie rock trio from Columbus' noise scene. The band is signed to Philadelphia's Siltbreeze Records, a popular landing place for Columbus bands. The post-punk "non-structure" may put off some listeners, especially if buzzing guitars and discordance is not your thing. The band's decidedly lo-fi first release, "Magic Flowers Droned", is somewhat inconsistent, but it has its high points, one of which is the song "Portals" which I have posted below...

9 AnswersRock and Pop1 decade agoIntroducing: Care to rate my local "band of the week" (#1 in a series) ?
I live in Columbus, Ohio- a city that, despite making great strides in the last couple of decades, is still trying to shake its "cowtown" image. I've decide to do my part by starting a series on Y!A featuring bands or solo artists that are either from- or got their start- in my hometown. I'm going to try and do this once a week on Wednesdays. Here goes something...
TIMES NEW VIKING is a low-fi indie rock band from Columbus' burgeoning noise scene, combining loud distortion-filled music with catchy melodies and guitar hooks. Last year the band, like Dayton's Guided By Voices before them, made the leap from Siltbreeze Records to the higher profile Matador Records. Their debut on Matador "Rip It Off" reached #17 on the Billborad Heatseekers chart. This is the band's latest single "Call and Response" off of the 7" EP "Stay Awake" released in October. You should have no trouble staying awake...

5 AnswersRock and Pop1 decade agoDo fundamentalist Atheists and Christians make up the vast majority of people in R&S? ?
Or are they just the loudest? Anyone here not a sheep? Anyone here not simply to prosyletize or ridicule? I can almost understand the Christians- their religion instructs them to spread the word, but what's the point in ridiculing or damning one another based on our beliefs or non-beliefs?

Just saw it on Letterman (a re-run from last month) and was shocked. I'm not sure what I think just yet. He's versatile- that much can't be denied, but his Brian Johnson/Iron Maiden vocals left me shaking my head a bit. What do you think?

16 AnswersRock and Pop1 decade agoWhat's your favorite live rock performance from a TV show ?
IMO, live rock performances on TV are generally not very good, especially Grammy and Super Bowl halftime performances. Of course there are always exceptions; the performances that make you stop whatever you're doing and pay attention. What is your favorite?

I'm not hip to the latest keyboard abbreviations. It looks like a sideways "mooning" or a pair of balls/boobs. Seriously i keep seeing this on Y!A and myspace, etc.
54 AnswersOther - Internet1 decade agoWhat songs would you put on a Mix CD for my 13-year-old niece?
Songs NOT full of f-bombs, OVERLY sexual, or containing OBVIOUS drug references?
I want to make a mix CD (of rock songs) for my niece but I don't want to include anything with a parental advisory or released by Disney (I'm trying not to offend her parents OR my ears). Oh, and no preachy crappy Christian music (sorry if this offends anyone). THANKS!
Her mom mostly listens to Country and her dad Classic Rock.

4 AnswersRock and Pop1 decade agoWho should replace Ronnie Lane on bass for reformed The Faces?
Sounds to be like there are going to have a number of guest bassists. Flea has already been named as one of them. As great of a bassist as he is, I think he's a bad fit. Personally, I'd like to see Tommy Stinson from The Replacements. Who would you like to fill the role?

I am a Crew fan and I would hate to see Eddie Gaven or Brad Evans be drafted. Of those two, my guess is that Gaven will go.
