Where can I buy a normal (NOT PLASMA/FLAT SCREEN) TV these days?

I've just bought a house. Up until now I've been living in rented accommodation, making do with a 14" portable TV. Now that I'm moving to a proper house, I want a decent sized TV, but apart from the fact that I can't afford to spend a fortune on it, I don't actually LIKE flat screen TVs, they just look like computer monitors to me. I want an "old fashioned" normal TV, preferably with a black surround (anything I've found so far is silver and looks pretty cheap and tacky). You wouldn't think it would be so difficult, but everything is huge, ridiculously expensive plasma flat screen...........it seems you can't buy "normal" TVs anymore!!

I know two couples that bought those things earlier this year with their income tax money. One couple (boyfriend/girlfriend) receive state assistance and have already received eviction notices from their landlord and the other couple just found out that they had excellent credit (HAD being the operative). Just two weeks ago their utlities were shut off for a week and were late paying the mortgage twice this year! Both still have that TV. A third person I know brings in $600 a month on SSI, also gets energy assistance and medical assistance. She stated that she is getting one!! Earlier this year she even managed to refinance her home and blew the money with nothing to show for it. Still getting the state and federal aid! Her mortgage is almost the entire SSI check and she somehow still gets the best, newest, most expensive things. I bet if I go over there in a couple months she'll have one of those TVs in her family room. My own family (most) have a comfortable income yet it wasn't until 1990 before my mom got her first VCR and microwave. My grandmother still doesn't believe in buying alot of the "modern" gadgets until they come down in price and by then they'll have something newer and better. Some people it appears who CAN afford the purchases choose not too and the others it appears who really should be using the money else where buy - buy - buy (spend it like you got it mentality). What a mixed up world.

They don't have to be huge, or expensive, but really why would you want an old one - apart from the look of the actual box, flat screens give a much better picture and will allow you much more scope for where you want to put it. You may also find an old style one doesn't work in a few years when everything goes digital.

If you're hell bent on an old style one, maybe ebay or a retro shop, or even a car boot/garage sale would be a good place to try... I wish I'd read this question a week ago, before chucking out my old tv - I'd have sold it to you!

A great place is craigslist.org. I buy tons of used stuff there, and I even got into selling some stuff. You can find almost anything depending on your location. The bigger the city- the more variety. You can even post wanted ads and people will send you info on what they have. I suggest you try it out. You can get a decent used TV for a good price! Just be careful. Deal locally only... and always bring someone with you when you meet someone to make a purchase. Good luck.

well you can buy normal tvs, but you gotta understand the future is here and tv's are going to all be the flat screens so basically a few years from now thats all your gonna find unless you want the cheap tacky silver ones you talked about, i bought a silver one and its not cheap looking, i actually prefer silver, anyway go to kmart or walmart and get one, they always have them

Cash Converters usually sell old style TV's for decent prices too. Second hand yes but way cheaper too. Well worth a visit. (I have one from there).

You must be mad, old style TVs take up masses of space, weigh a ton and will soon be obsolete.

That said I hope your new home is a happy home for you- Good luck.

My local charity shop had plenty, big, wide and so on, couldn't give 'em ours.

    Try http://www.freecycle.org/

It seems that silver has taken over from charcoal as the "technology colour" now.

    http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/content/products/det...

Dark grey (mostly), flat CRT, and digital (so no extra box needed).
