Emos and goths?
Hey, i am doing a paper on urban subcultures and i was wondering what do emos and goths stand for, what are their views on life and why do people become part of this cultures. i want to know what it means to be emo or goth. Thanks!
(i'm neither so i really need the help)
If you could recommend some emo music that would be great too (i have to present the paper in a creative way)

I'm forever getting accused of being emo/goth but to me it is nothing more than clothes, makeup, music etc that I like...I don't wear what I wear or listen to what I do to be part of a "scene" or because I have any particular philosophy which is the same as other people who dress similarly to me, it is just that I have always liked that style of clothing and music..I started wearing what could be called goth clothes back when I was around 16, when I got a part time job, had my own money and could choose what clothes I bought and wore for myself. (nearly 14 years ago so I'm probably to old to be emo lol), and the only thing that made me choose them was that I liked them...then you have the social thing of some people who don't like that style of clothing having a go at you, so at that age you find yourself drawn to people who dress a bit outlandishly like you as they don't harrass you over your clothing! I never really made any kind of conscious decision to be part of a "scene", it just sort of happened that way!
I have always found it odd that people seem to assume there is some great sub culture which has a cohesive set of beliefs which are the same just because people dress a certain way; people don't assume that everyone who wears jeans and a t-shirt thinks the same or likes the same kind of music as everyone else who wears jeans and t-shirts!
I do think the media etc try to big it up to be more than it really is; which to me at any rate is nothing beyond wearing clothes I like...I have met people who have been called emo/goth who like different music to me, have different political ideas to me, different moral codes to me, just because we happen to dress similarly doesn't really mean to me that there even IS a goth/emo sub-culture as such.
Sorry if this isn't very helpful, but thats how I feel anyway! I am sure there will be loads of people who disagree with me!
