Why would anyone be afraid of the number 666?

Because they don't realize the real number is 999...they got it wrong in the translations

It's the number of the beast in Revelations (the anti-christ or satan) - in later editions, anyway. It's a lot liek the fear of the number 13, in a way - it's considered unholy, or to bring bad luck, or to signify Satan at work or in control.

(from QI: In one district they had a bus route 666, which people disliked because of the mark of the beast thing. So they changed the number to 616. Later, an older version of the Bible was discovered which had the mark of the beast as 616)

(Also, it's not Satan. In numerology code, commonly used at the time the Bible was written to critise important figures without fear of reprisal, both 666 and 616 signify Emporer Nero, who oppressed Christians...)

Well, try checking the Bible. Somewhere in Revelation. Look for the chapter with the part about the beast (either the beast out of the sea, the beast out of the earth or the dragon). The number is the sign of the devil. Whoever has this means that they are the devil's. It is also a mark of "that person or things office", like an airborne badge says you are an airborne jumper or a US postal service patch which says you are with the postal service. When you have this number, especially at the end of times, it means you're heading straight for Hell, aka God's wrath. In Hell, you'll be tormented FOREVER. You dont need to fear the number because it is simply a sign. You should fear what it represents, eternal death and damnation.

It's supposedly the number of the devil.

Although some say it's 665, 616 or 606.

its suppose to be the Devil's/Satan's/Goatman's number 666 thats why everyone is afraid of it and you will notice there is not one House number with 666.

666 is the number of the DEVIL, or EVIL.

God's or the good number is 777.

(which is referred to a lot as the devil, which, if you're not scared of him, you really are perfect)(which no one's perfect, so you're obviously scared of him)(so you're scared of the beast)(which means you're scared of 666)(so you have Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.)
