My Dwarf Gourami has suddenly bloated! Scales are NOT sticking out. Any ideas what it may be?

Gourami is a reddish in color...but now the faceand tale area are darker than normal...body is bloated and almost silver in color. It's the only Gourami in the tank....has been in tank for over a year..no new fish have been added...water changed out about every 2 weeks. Serious answers only, please.

Update:

I don't change the water completely every 2 weeks...just add what has evaporated, really. All of the fish have been in the tank for a year..so it's nothing new to the tank. The fish are fed once a day. Just what they can consume in a few minutes time.

hmmm....that's a tough question. you should change your water every week and not every two weeks. don't listen to that other person who said you are changing the water too often. the water changes are needed because you wanna get all the fish's waste out of your tank and keep nitrates down. i do 50% water changes everyweek in my 75gal tank.

your fish might be suffering from "Dropsy or Malawi Bloat. The symptoms are Bloated fish, scales are raised, possible loss or lessening of body coloration. This is not really a disease, but a symptom of a bacterial infection and possibly malnutrition. There are medications available but try to increase the quality of the water by performing a 25% water change every other day and increase the quality of fish food given. If your fish's condition doesn't improve, try the medication. Your local pet store should have medication for this disease. Remove any carbon filtration before using medication because the carbon will remove the medication from the water."

hope this helps. also keep doing research on the topic to make sure this is what's wrong with your fish.

    good luck!

get it out of your tank right now, or your other fish might catch its sickness. I would bet the other fish brought the parasite into your tank. your gourami has had it. next time get a small extra tank at your place and put the new fish into that. after two weeks and no diseases then add them to your bigger tank and enjoy.
