By Law does my apartment complex have to fix my air conditioner?
We had a 6 month lease on our 2br 2 bath apartment with central air, with the ability to extent month-to-month after the first 6 months. We have been here 9 months so have been extending month-to-month for 3 months.
In APRIL our AC stopped working. They keep sending maintenance out to fix it and it generally works for about 2 days. Then it breaks again. More days than not it is 95 degrees or more inside our apartment.
They told us if we sign another 6 or 12 month lease they will replace the AC, but we think that is illegal... we still have a lease, it is just extended... shouldn't they have to replace our AC in the same timely manner they would replace a resident with a 12 month lease's AC?
It is currently 94 degrees in my home office.
Even though they leased us a 2br 2 bath with central air they don't have to make sure the central air works???
We are not planning on being here for 6 more months. We are pre-approved for a mortgage and are looking for a home right now. That doesn't change the fact I'm sweating in my underwear while trying to work right now.
We DO have the money to buy window units, but considering we hope to move in a month or two, why would we?

no. you do not have to sign another lease just to get them to repair it.they should have replaced it along time ago by the sound-es of it.they just want to try and keep you there so they don't have to go through finding someone knew to rent.lots of duplex companies do this now.tell you they will do the work that they are supposed to do anyways as long as you sign another agreement. you can always check with landlord and safety commission.

I think if allowed in your complex you should get a few window units if you can afford it. I do not tolerate temps above 65 well at all and consider it a requirement of living somewhere that i not sweat a drop due to temperature of the building. IF you dont have the money then just sign the 6 month, if you dont plan on moving anyways
