If you're using Firefox, download Adblock, flashblock, and NoScript. If you're not already here's the links.
Firefox. It is much more secure than Internet Explorer, and it has a built in popup blocker.http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Adblock. What it does is it block ad's, and popup's that slip in under Firefox's built in blocker. To block an ad do this: Right-click on a banner and choose "Adblock Image" or "Adblock Frame" from the menu, click image to block that specific ad, or click frame to block the frame(what the difference between Image and Frame is, when you block the image, the frame is still there, and the ad you blocked wont be shown again, but the frame will show other ad's except the one you blocked, so when you block the frame there can be no more ad's because the frame that showed them is gone). https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/186...
NoScript. What it does is it allows JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run only from trusted domains, and websites of your choice. and to block them from running on websites that you don't want to run Java, and other related programs. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
Flashblock. what it does is it stop's all flash content on a page from loading, such as animated ad's. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433
Hope this help's

As leisa4202, FireFox seems to do this best.
Once FireFox is installed, you can quickly access what Add-Ons are available by clicking on "Tools" (form the top menu bar) and "Add-Ons"
Another nice feature (although it only works for images) that comes with using FireFox is that you can right-click on images and select the "Block Images from..." which helps out a fair bit.

Internet Explorer 6 and 7 and, Firefox. I believe they all have a Pop-Up blocker built in. For IE: click on Tools / Pop Up blocker / Pop Up blocker settings / you can set Filter Level to High and it will block just about all Pop-Up's, that's the way I have mine set all the time.

I would suggest using Mozilla Firefox as your web browser, and getting script and ad blocking plug-ins. Adblock Plus and NoScript work great for me. You can get them through the Firefox website. I hope they work for you.

"You can use a custom HOSTS file to block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers. This is accomplished by blocking the connection(s) that supplies these little gems."
Does not matter what browser that you use.
MVPS has an excellent HOSTS file, free at:

Why don't people understand? It is so basic. Facilities like Yahoo! Answers, MySpace etc. are free for users but have to be paid for somehow. It is the ads that pay for the facility (otherwise you would be paying a monthly/annual subscription). If you paid somebody to run ads for you or your website, I'm sure you would not be happy if, having paid to have your ads displayed, you discovered they had in fact been hidden or removed.
Personally I think that people who ask about blocking/hiding/covering ads on Yahoo! Answers or MySpace must be brain dead morons with no understanding of how things work. How the hell do they think these things are paid for?

you might try zone alarm. it has multiple leyers of security and many security features to select from, incliding lockout, filtering, permissions, trust zones and ad blocking adjustments. very adaptable and customize selections to choose.
