Why does the US Government feel it has to interfere in the internal affairs of a sovereign democracy?

I refer to its expressed "concern" about the arrest of former Malaysian deputy PM Anwar Ibrahim for questioning on a criminal matter. What business is this of the USA?

Update:

Citizens "protesting" about issues which concern them, and governments criticizing other governments on internal affairs are different issues. And as for "phony democracies", what's phony about every citizen having a vote and the guy with the most votes winning? Oh, I forgot, it doesn't work that way in the USA. (so I guess it must be wrong)

Update 2:

Here we go with "phony democracy" again. I repeat that Malaysian elections are fair and just. I'm glad the "might is right" factor has been raised, because that's exactly my concern, that the USA believes it has the right to impose its own flawed standards and beliefs on the rest of the world, no matter what the rest of the world wants.

Adam B said it best - you can't force the world to be silent. The world takes note when they see injustice and Malaysia is a phony democracy where due process is a joke.

And if you didn't know, might makes right. The U.S. will always have the power to suppress tyranny throughout the world for the betterment of this planet.

Not like Malaysia having protests about things happening thousands of miles away in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, eh?

Look, you lot can conduct your little phony democracy any way you like, but you can't force the rest of the world to remain silent about it. This is the second time that the authorities have harassed Ibrahim about exactly the same nonsense charges. The rest of the world is not so stupid as to believe that this is happening by coincidence to this man, at this time.

expressing concern is not the same thing as interfering in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation. If recent history is any help, you will know full well when the US interferes in Malaysia's internal affairs.
