Tips for writing a song (guitar)?

Would you start by writing lyrics or by working out a chord patern?

How would you decide your strumming and when to change?

I wouldn't mind writing a song with some friends but where should I begin?

Thanks for reading.

Update:

thanks jimmy b.... but we'll just write a song that makes fun of each other. nothing serious

go ahead and listen to some of mine :) I started with lyrics...then went to melody and then found good chords to work with...but you can do the chords first and then the melody if that works better for you. but i would definitely start with lyrics first...if you know what you're writing about then you can build music around that particular feel :) good luck!

Well, that is the challenge with writing lyrics with out the guitar. It's effortless to write down phrases, however tougher to cause them to drift with the song. The largest tip I might have is that this: Don't be afraid to difference your lyrics. What I imply is, should you write lyrics with out a guitar, and you are now not an skilled musician, you can have got to difference and rearrange them to cause them to have compatibility together with your melody. You cannot be reluctant to difference them, in many instances whatever will have got to "provide" to cause them to a singable line. Here's one other tip, write your lyrics, then sing them right into a tape recorder. Go again and write a guitar facet that matches what you have got sung. The purpose I say that is considering that you can recognise that the lyrics drift, considering that you have got sung them. They'll be extra usual than a guitar melody that you simply attempt to squeeze lyrics into. Or, sing them whilst strumming one-of-a-kind chords at the guitar. I write lyrics first after which upload the guitar and melody later, however many write the melody first and lyrics later, so it may be performed.

most groups im pretty sure start with lyrics rather than a "chord patern" however some groups do however start with little riffs and build from there. your choice really.

the strummin part is up to you...do what you feel

friends are usually good up until the point where your in conflict with each other over the lyrics themeselves so i would suggest, unless your having troubles coming up with ideas, to write your lyrics by yourself. and remember dont put to much thought into because that is when time starts to get consumed

I write songs too. I start with the lyrics before I work out a pattern. It's easier because you can fit the tone to your song; you're not trying to fit words into something you already have. I usually start with the verses so it helps me write the chorus. Basically, let the music come to you (sounds gay, but true).

    Good luck! :)

  • I would start by coming up with a vague tune structure, and then work on the lyrics. As the lyrics fall into place, a pattern for the tune will slowly emerge.
