Plasma and LCD panels may look similar, but the flat screen and thin profile is where the similarities end. Plasma screens, as its name suggests, uses a matrix of tiny gas plasma cells charged by precise electrical voltages to create a picture. LCD screens (liquid crystal display) are in layman's terms sandwiches made up of liquid crystal pushed in the space between two glass plates. Images are created by varying the amount electrical charge applied to the crystals.
Both plasma and LCD sets produce excellent pictures.
What advantages does plasma have over LCD?
Apart from better contrast due to its ability to show deeper blacks, plasma screens typically have better viewing angles than LCD. Viewing angles are how far you can sit on either side of a screen before the picture's quality is affected. You tend to see some brightness and color shift when you're on too far of an angle with LCDs, while a plasma's picture remains fairly solid. This is steadily changing, however, with more and more LCDs entering the market with viewing angles equal to or greater than some plasmas. Plasmas can also produce a brighter color, once again due to light leakage on an LCD affecting its color saturation.
What advantages does LCD have over plasma?
Apart from being price competitive, LCD has the edge over plasma in several other key areas. LCDs tend to have higher native resolution than plasmas of similar size, which means more pixels on a screen.
LCDs also tend to consume less power than plasma screens, with some estimates ranging that power saving at up to 30 per cent less than plasma. LCDs are also generally lighter than similar sized plasmas, making it easier to move around or wall mount.
Personally I would recommend to buy plasma. Plasmas give you more bang for your buck at the big end of town, and while LCDs can give you better resolution, plasma still has the edge in terms of picture quality. One other thing to look for, whether you opt for plasma or LCD.
How do you like to get 50" Plasma for only $949 ? :) Then go with LG 50PC5D 50 in. 720p Flat Panel Plasma HDTV. I think it is an awesome deal for awesome TV.

There is alot of misinformation on this thread. Yes Plasma has a lifespan, but then again so does LCD, Both in theory are gonna last about the same amount of time. (About 25 years with watching TV 5 hours a day) before it reaches it's half brightness and yes that is the same with both LCD's and Plasma.
No Plasma does not degrade, the plasma gas is trapped and has nowhere to go and is airtight, I don't see how it could degrade. The brightness will fade but again it will take about 25 years and by then TV's today will be way different than TV's in 25 years.
Plasma has better picture qaulity and darker blacks and doesnt suffer from motion blur as much as LCD, but does have the protective screen, so if you can control lighting or watch mostly at night or can close the shades than go for Plasma.
LCD does not have a protective screen and is brighter so you can watch TV in a bright room, but does suffer from motion blur on fast scenes like sports and car chase scenes. You'll get pixellation which overall can be distracting.
They both have pro's and con's but you need to decide which is better for the room your putting the TV in.

The people who said LCD were right on target. Static images (images that stay on the screen for extended periods of time) can burn in on a plasma. One other considering you might want to think about: Samsung offers a game mode, which actually helps with the gamma from game boxes, and also cuts down on the processing speed. The benefit of this is that the picture processing that is normally done (and causes delay) will be gone, and you'll be playing "realtime" instead of waiting for the picture to be processed. (sometimes these delays take as long as a half second) In some games, this slight difference will keep Tony Hawk on his skateboard, and your soldier alive in Halo3. Sony is not terrible; but for the game play, definitely go with a Samsung. Good luck to you!

HD is a picture format and Plasma is a type of TV.
There is no comparison.
Plasma TV's will display HD signals as will DLP, LCD and Pojection TV's as well.
Plasma TV's degrade quickly and are more expensive. The plasma gas has a longer life than it used to, but they still gradually degrade.
LCD TV's are less pricey and generally have a good picture quality for the money. Dead pixels are the biggest problem.
DLP TV's offer a great picture but can still be a bit pricey. They are probably more reliable but you will have to replace a single bulb after a few years use depending on how much you use it. You will be able to replace the buld yourself if you want.

HDTV stands for high definition TV. A plasma is a type of hdtv along with LCD and DLP. The best resolution is 1080p. The best thing to do is go into a best buy and browse around the tv section. watch each one until you have a few that catch your eye. There really is no best picture except for what you personally think looks the best.

LCD's are more expensive, period, but a far better television (hands down!). If you see it priced any different you are getting ripped off.
Plasma is a technology on its way out the door. A plasma tv is always heavier, has a fixed life span and MOST IMPORTANTLY provides you with a terrible glare. LCD televisions have no glare at all. Go to any store and smile and wave at yourself in front of a plasma, but you will see no reflection from an LCD.
The LCD is always the better choice.

Plasma is HD. HD is defined as pixcels per square inch. HDTV displays come in Plasma, Liquid Crystal Display, and the ancient Cathode ray tube. The LCD use less power, not so bright, and the angle of view is narrow. CRTs take up large space, has large viewing angle, has the best lumens and is the cheapest. Plasma uses lots of power, is bright, and has large viewing angle- but very expensive.
If you want large screen, go LCD or Plasma. LCD is cheaper.
